Default how to purchase a used motor and transmission

i am planning on purchasing a used motor/trans to build it for autocross competition (SCCA, EP). unfortunately i dont know a thing about purchasing a motor let a lone building one(but i'll tackle one issue at a time).

i plan on building/rebuilding the entire block and head.

i currently have a D15B1 motor, i will be looking for is a D16A6 and a trans to match it.

so my question is what things/signs should i be looking for/looking out for when purchasing a used motor/trans?

thanks.

everyone takes risk when purchasing a used motor just because naturally...its a USED motor. you dont know what kind of abuse the motor had in the past. best thing to do is look around for a reputable engine/trans importer. make sure they have a warranty(usually 30day start up) and do a compression leak down test.

why bother swapping to a d16? its virtually the same thing as your d15 honestly i ran both and they pretty much were identical in power.... especially if you plan on rebuilding the engine. ... for that amount of money you can go with a b16 at least.. or even b20 swap..

i was thinking of swapping b/c i thought a d16 would have a larger parts selection than my d15.

i am planning on staying in class for autocross. a b16 or b20 would bump me out of class to DM and would also add ~+75lbs to the front. and from what i have been reading i would have a better chance of staying in powerband with a d16 vs a b16 esp. on an autocross course.

You need to ask this in the autocross/road racing section if you want a good answer.
