Default Just a few questions: Ignition and Racing

Okay.... well I've gotten most of the kinks out of the JDM H22 swap and I'm awaiting my first bolt on which is the Megan Racing 4-2-1 header. (I already have 2.5" cat-back exhaust and intake).....

Last but not least I have figured out the random stumbling problem. It was routed to the ignition coil which had apparently fallen off the jank *** mount we made for it and was sitting atop the hot thermostat housing... When it got hot, it started running a very low current, causing the stumble and weakness spells I experienced... For now I mounted it right by the intake side of the valve cover and the problem has mostly vanished but it still occurs in random increments after driving for a while perhaps the coil is head damaged and it also isn't mounted upright which I hear it HAS to be?....

(1) My question is, what's with these aftermarket MSD kits they make? What do I need to install one of these things? Should I get this, or just get a higher capacity coil? I can get one for 150 bucks around here from a guy I know and I figure this will solve all of the problems where the car breaks up in the top end..... Let me know.

(2) I recently went to the drag strip to give it a run (only an ebay intake, 2.5" exhaust).... My best time was 15.043@94.16mph.... I think I could've done alot better though seeing as how I keep getting these shitty *** 2.4-2.6 60-foot times.... I just can't figure out to get the damn thing off the line with some authority..... I tried launching at 4,000rpm and all it does is bog to hell... 5,000rpm all it does is spin to hell lol.... So I finally just held it at 4,800rpm and kinda slipped into the clutch fast to get off the line, dropped it completely and then pedalled to get that time. Its not bad considering that the car has some bullshit stuff on it that I dont even call "mods" aside from exhaust and a fart can..... But I see people getting 14.8's and mid 14's....

How the hell do you get these bitches off the line with a decent 60 foot time?!...

Thanks,
Bryan

I like MSD and have used a few different boxes over the years without problems, but honestly your stock parts should suffice. You may just need a good tuneup... cap, rotor, wires etc.

As for the launching it just takes practice. I've also found that slipping the clutch just a bit off the line works wonders, but it takes alot of practice to get that fine line between not spinning and not bogging.

Its an H23 dizzy rebuilt with new parts in it from the old motor..... I'm gonna buy some plugs for it ASAP, but they don't seem to be the problem. The coil seems to be sending a weak current to the motor sometimes. It'll feel really weak in the midrange as if there's no throttle response and break up badly up top (still running low 15's however lol), but once I shut it off, pop the hood and fiddle with the coil.... I can come back like 20 minutes later and it runs like it has some sense.... Come to think of it, I am using the stock H23 coil which is like god-knows-how-old (car has 216k on it lol).... **** son, I'll look into just getting a new coil and see if that does it.

Yeah man, everyone seemed impressed with my car for some reason.... At edgewater they've had REALLY bad Prelude showings there.... I see guys running consistent low to mid 16's with 5th gens.... Some kid that works for TPR out here has a sweet *** modded 5th gen that apparently has bolt ons and Hondata, yet he always runs slower times than I do on a pretty much bone-***-stock 4th gen Lude.

I'll give it some practice one I get this trans working much better..... There's a problem where the clutch pedal doesn't always come back up (there's full fluid.. i checked) and the trans sometimes grinds going into fifth gear..... How do you add/check/change fluid on these things??

thanks,
Bryan

your clutch sounds like it just needs to be bled. there should be a writeup on it somewhere.

have you checked your timing to see what it is set at? sounds like it may be off especially if you've removed the distributor.

I took it to performance Honda shop locally and they put a timing light on it and claimed that it was okay....

Its just so god damn tempermental... I'll hop in it and it'll feel really good, then after a while it gets weak and starts doing that stuttering **** once you get into VTEC.... The CEL has been on for a while, but I can't pull the code cause the CEL doesn't come on until the actually engine is started up..... VTEC however still engages. The car works fine sometimes, and once I relocated the coil it acted fine!! Now it just started with this little bitch **** again....

I just bought some Iridium plugs for it (went to another shop for a recommendation... everyone tells me different ****.....).... It just almost feels like some kind of spark retardation, like in a more modern car with traction control... It just dials back the timing so you have just a little amount of power... That's what it feels like... The dizzy, cap, and rotor have all been replaced because it was new (in June). I'll try some wires to see if that helps... but other than that, I'm pretty lost here.....

As for the clutch problem, I visited the people that originally vacuum bled it and it the guy said he's sure as hell that there's no air in there.... And tells me that maybe the Slave cylinder is bad... but I bought a new one of those and put that bitch on when I was doing the swap anyways cause I figured it would need one! How could I buy a bad slave cylinder??!! The fluid isn't low... I just filled it and its full, but the pedal never comes all the way back up and the range of engagement is very small making stop-starting very difficult.....

WTF man...
