Default carpet and coardboard in trunk (above spare tire)

i've had my civic for 3 years, but haven't really given much thought to the smell inside my car (i have allergies and can't really smell it, but everyone says my car smells like battery acid). i investigated the trunk and it looks like the smell is coming from the underside of the carpet/cardboard that covers the spare tire. it doesn't smell like plain cardboard. it has a strange chemical smell to it, and everyone says my car has a distinct, unpleasant scent.

does anyone know if something can be done to the trunk to remedy the smell, and do you know what exactly is giving off the smell? is it toxic?

You could try taking it out for a couple days and see if the effect diminishes.

i think if it was toxic you would of been sick by now in the 3 years you had it. i would take out the tire and clean everything under the carpet/ cardboard, then spray some Febreze in the trunk.
