Default D4 flashing Trans stuck in 2nd

I have a 1998 CRV with an auto trans. My D4 light started flashing and my speedometer stoped working. For a few months at a rolling stop my truck would shift into gear very hard if I did not take off very slow and then one night I put the truck in reverse and the D4 light started flashing. I put the truck into drive and there seemed to be no power as if it was in 2nd and my speedometer did not work. On the drive home it would not shift out of 2nd or into 1st and there was no drag from the engine when coasting. It would go into D1 and I could shift it into D2 but D3 and D4 stay in 2nd. On the drive home I also lost all power and found that the alternator went bad at the same time. I do not see how or if the 2 problems are related or what may be wrong with the trans. I do most of my own work but this is my first honda and do not know much about trans so if you have any ideas please help.

Take the alternator off and have it tested. I would think a low voltage situation may have caused the problem.

I agree. The gear selector you move is only a way to signal to the computer that you want a particular selection. There is not a mechanical link from your hand to the gears in the transmission. Without proper voltage to the computer and the rest of the components, strange things can start to happen.
