Default Pro's and Cons of bondo

Alright, my CRX is suffering from the honda curse - quarter panels have about 2.5 inch wide rust spots on them, and before I do something stupid, I wanna get as much info on the pro's and con's of bondo'ing verse rewelding.

I know you will all say get it done right, but I'm just wondering how bad of an idea using bondo is. I'm on a tight budget at the moment, and the lowest price I was give was $400 per side. To me, that seems excessive for the side of the rust spots...

Thanks

Bondo is really made for filling in small little pits and smoothing out surfaces before painting...you can do big areas with it and it may look OK for a while but it will still be obvious that it's Bondo. Plus the chances of cracks are pretty good.

it would probably just be to get me through the upcoming winter, and the next spring have it redone the correct way.

I guess my main concern is, would it stop the rust in the mean time, and be a viable option for a short period of time?

If you can grind all the rust off to the bare metal and then put any kind of coating on it to keep moisture out you will stop the rust...so you wouldn't have have any Bondo on there if you just want to stop the rusting. Bondo is mainly just cosmetic.

There is a good rust-fighting coating called POR-15 that will absorb surface rust (not heavy chunks or anything ) and seal it off completely. You could coat it with that stuff after you sand off the heavy stuff and then do whatever you want on top of it and not have to worry.

Bondo is gay . bondo is good for filling small dings and what not. But to use to fill holes like alot of ppl do no matter what its gonna look **** in a very short time. when I did the body on my 89 I went to the dealer and bought new quarter panels paid few dollars but was worth every penny cuz 3 years later my rex still looks amazing.

if your not going to at least try and do it right the first time ,leave it untill you can ... i'm not trying to be mean ,just trying save you from headaches and haveing to pay more when the body has to clean all that **** out of there ...

plastic filler isnt water proof and the rust will come back and come back fast ,like with in a month ...id grind out as much as i could and buy navell jelly (think thats what its called) and clean out all the rust you can't get with a grinder ,then buy some fiberglass filler ,water proof and will last untill you get it fixed

or you can do the same but with fiberglass cloth or mate ,way better option i think ,who ever does the repair will just have to tap on it with a hammer and it will come loose. Then take a flate scrwdriver and the hammer on the side and it will all pop off

to do this your self shoulden't cost more then $60 bucks

oh and there isn't anything worng with bondo ,its a lower brand of body work materials ,but does the job ,if applyed right it wont crack ,if you have more then a 1/4 thick on the panel then yes it will crack over time

first one to say we have a paint and body section. thats where this thread this belongs.

like one of the posters said. if you are eager to fix this and not the right way with new metal. go the fiber glass route. its a lot better and less likely to crack. still has high chances but not as high
