Default Horrible fuel economy: 2007 Element SC 5MT

I have purchased 2 tanks of fuel for this rather nice vehicle. And each time I did the math the vehicle is getting 16-17 MPG. According to the EPA information listed on the window decal this vehicle average 21 city 25 highway.

My wife drives this vehicle 29 miles round trip to work everyday, and 25 of these miles are on the freeway where she uses cruise control. She also shifts at 2500-2800 RPMs.

Would you say I have a problem?

EPA estimates are unreasonable as far as I am concerned. Even though I know some people who claim to get more than the suggested mileage, most don't. It is difficult to drive perfectly economically in real-world driving conditions.

I hate to give the riceboy comment, but, maybe you should invest in a intake/upgraded plugs, or something... I am looking into buying the SC and saw the fuel rating, and was blown away!!! Especially since I have a k20 powered car that gets 30mpg!! But the aerodynamics have to be like driving a brick down the road.....

Whats the fuel capacity on those things, by the way...? Has to hold more than 15 gallons to get decent miles outta the tank

14.1 fuel tank capacity. The vehicle weighs 3500 lbs.

if you just bought the element then ya its gonna get crappy gas mileage. i use to get around 19mpg when i first bought the car, after break in it went up to 21mpg. after i passed 10k, i'm getting anywhere from 22-26mpg.

so if the car is brand new w/ triple digit miles on the odometer, then its normal. If you have had the car for a while now then yeah get it checked.

its the gearing that kills the element i have an sc and if i keep my foot out of i get 26 to 27 hwy just wait till you get it broke in. however i made a 3 hr trip in 1 hr45min and still got 20 so go figure. i'm getting a rbc intake and i hear that that will help with milage so ill post up when i get it on.

Yeah, I'm on there already. As soon as I get my 1st payment sent off, Ill be doing custom exhaust with Hytech twin loop muffler, possibly a header, RBC manifold, and a TSX Throttle body. I'll wait till Injen put out their cold air kit. I'm definately looking into forged wheels and adding a 6th gear and swapping out the final drives between my wifes Element and my 07 Si.

how many miles do u have on it currently?

i would check tire pressure, extra items that add weight take them out, and try synthetic oil at the next oil change (i like royal purple) and see if that helps.

i almost got the SC but i needed seating for 5.

just wait till she really breaks in. I have had mine since they arrived here and after my 1k mile I ROUTINELY get more than 26 mpg but I have a manual and thats mixed city/hwy. On one trip from the keys to beaufort SC i got 33, 31 mpg the whole way up and back!!
