I don't know if the H23 pan would fit, but any 4Gen oil pan will not fit with the 5Gen engine stiffener. You'd need the 4Gen stiffener bracket and the flywheel cover. The 4Gen oil pans are also designed to use an oil pan gasket. The 5Gen only uses a small piece of rubber to seal the hump in the pan. The rest of the pan is sealed with Hondabond, so keep that in mind.

any h-series pan will fit without needing to change the oil pickup.

I thought the H22a4 pan is aluminum. My theory is that when honda went open deck, they needed more block stiffening so the pan was changed to cast aluminum.

All of the 5Gens I worked on had aluminum pans. I have been told by a very good friend of mine that he had worked on a 97 with a stamped pan. This was years ago, though.

I really doubt the pan will do much for block stiffening.

some jdm 97 blocks are still P13 closed deck rather than p5m open deck.

Was it mugen or spoon that makes a B-series Aluminum pan, and in the interview, the engineer said the pan helped stablilize the block from controting at high rpms
