just so you know...ANY transmission shop will charge you at least $1000 to fix your tranny. Yes I'm serious, you will not find many that will do it for less.

The reason why? They will not just fix what you tell them to. They will replace everything because they offer a warranty and they do not want something they DIDN'T replace to *** up and ruin the tranny so they have to buy you a new one.

Might be better to read/learn and do it yourself. THere are also several on HT that fix trannies.

Yes, I realize that. I already fuked myself the first time around by getting a used JDM tranny with my swap that was a bit older than my motor --> healthy motor, not-so-healthy tranny. And any used GSR tranny with factory LSD (has to be JDM, or else US with limited slip then installed) is not going to be had for less than $900. So I'd rather spend the money knowing I will have a tranny in good shape as opposed to buying another used one that could have been beaten to death.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to learn to tear a tranny down... but to be perfectly honest, I don't have the time to learn, nor the resources to get it done. Cheap excuse maybe, but it's true. Therefore, I'd like to be pointed in the direction of a reputable shop. This is the first time I'd be taking my Civic anywhere so that's why I ask

Im in central NJ too. Ive debated this issue a few time, but since im still SOHC, its easier to just replace, and that whole deal, lol. Unfortunatly yes, they may go to charge you out the ***, but the best you can do is ask (if you know what exactly is broken) if they can replace just that part(s). Other than that, you may have to consider the possibilities of either having to do a DIY rebuild on it (by maybe finding someone in the area who has the know-how) or start looking around for a new trans, which would come up as about half the price of getting one rebuilt.

IMO, find a good used tranny.

There are plenty of tranny rebuild shops, I doubt few of them are cheaper than $1500

I agree, but without driving it, how can I determine that it's "good" and hasn't been beaten on? That's where I'm at now -- I got a used tranny with my motor. It "looked good" but, eh...

Plus, it's going to be next to impossible to source a B series tranny with GSR gearing and a factory limited slip. I'd prefer having it done right even if it costs twice as much. I'm kind of sick of dropping my tranny.

That was the ballpark I was thinking of anyway and I've accepted it.

You could buy a used ITR tranny for $1100 and have it put in for ~$200

If I buy a used tranny, I'd suck it up and just put it on myself. I'm looking for a near mint tranny, plus no 4.8 FD + 0.848 5th. Geez, I'm already cruising at like 4k @ 80 mph with the GSR 4.4 FD + 0.787 5th... I don't want to make that higher (ITR 5th + 4.8 FDR = 4300 RPM).

That's also why I want to rebuild it... custom gearing. B16 1-3, GSR 4th, LS 5th. I already hit 127 mph at redline in 4th... I think that's sufficient. I'd instead be at 3600 @ 80 mph in 5th with the LS 5th gear and the same 4.4 FD.

Custom gears will make it all even pricier. And telling any shop you want to install custom gears will make the tag heavier I'm sure.

I am in the same position as you are. i had bought a ls/vtec and come to find out that my tranny is bad after i swapped it in my hatch. I am now saving up to buy a tranny.

What is your GSR tranny, Cable or Hydro? OEM LSD?

replace all seals, 3-4 sleeve kit, 5-R sleeve kit and ISB is $475 in parts, $225 for labor and cleaning, then shipping which would be $60 EACH way via fedex insured.

I just finished a Cable JDM GSR LSD......parts and shipping is the expensive part.

******* sexy!

You might be able to search for it, but I did happen to see a person (maybe a sponsor) that rebuilt transmissions on here. I think it was around 700+ depending on what you wanted ie, syncros, new gears, LSD (w/ core)

what I'm most interested in is a or a to who ever provides the work. finding a place is one thing, but if my tranny comes back with 5 reverse gears and an overdriven reverse, well...

Check these guys out. I'm getting their TypeII tranny for my y8 this coming winter...
http://gearspeedinc.com/products.htm

Their TypeII remanufacture comes with a Quaife LSD, or a drag spool.

Look in the classifieds section, or try craigslist. You'll find something. You might be able to find something at a junkyard, but you'll have to know what you're looking for, how to take it off the car, and have the tools to do so.

I wouldnt bank your money on calling it "pointless". There are a number of experts on here that beg to differ. Mista Bone and Slowcivic2k would be more than glad to elaborate on why its much more cost efficient to rebuild the trans yourself than to simply find a new one.

For starters, this may be of help.

You could just buy another GSR or better yet a B16 tranny and swap over the diff.
