Default Poll of Members who actually have 12:1 CR in their B18C

what pistons did you use?

do you have stock ignition?

do you use a J&S Safeguard?

do you run an aftermarket fuel pump?

what's your injector size?

what's your current ignition timing?

Moi?: Endyn/Wisecos, MSD 6AL/Antivibration blaster 2 external coi/Magnecore wires/#7 NGK's gapped 0.040 in., RC 310's (S2000 360's on the way), Bosch fuel pump, 13 degrees BTDC...

do you REALLY need the J&S?

no safeguard
stock Si pump (although I just installed a 255 Walbro)
440cc injectors
stock timing(Yoshio tuned ECU).

sgt would 440cc injector be to much for a 2.0l and cams with over a 12.0mm lift
and 12.1CR ?

thanks to all who replied and were willing to share their experiences.

So Stephen is the only person wise enough to invest in a J&S.

Tony the Tiger runs a J&S as well.

Mine is on order. The investment outweighs the gamble of losing more (pistons, head, etc.).

also good to see that the stock ignition is up to the task. Erick Aquilar uses a stock system on his 2.1L B18C1 ....it's no slouch.

As I was saying to TodaSi on our PM: Every one of my modifications for this all motor mantra setup has had a headache or glitch associated with it...a monkey wrench thrown in, fly in the soup,...that needed some sort of adaptation to make it fit or work.

Not one was a straight bolt-on using the hardware supplied and walk away. I think it's great that we all share info enthusiastically but very little is mentioned in the way of potholes you may run into here. I must be the unlucky one that seems to find these? I don't think so. It's always good to see people who actually did the modification themselves answering these questions...more insight from actual experience.

On that theme, what major unexpected headache or delay did you face in setting this project up (either in the build up or tuning) ?

As I also said to TodaSi and SMSP when we chatted: could you imagine if people in my profession shared info the way people do in the import scene?: Yes, get that new Nakadate synthetic artificial heart valve guaranteed to last the lifetime it's in....what you didn't know that you needed special tissue glue and titanium acrylic sutures for it now that we have the patient's chest cracked open?!!

i dont personally think the J&S is that great of a tool. i figure that if u pay attention to ur motor, read ur plugs, look for telltale signs of detonation that u should b good to go. also the thought of havin forged pistons helps aleviate the pain and thought of the possibility of my motor blowing up.
as far as potholes in the buildup, there was only one for me. waiting for the machine work to b done, that took the longest, o yeah plus at the time i didnt have my parts. once the parts came everything went together easily. i cleaned the honing oil out of the block, i sprayed the WD40 in the cylinders after washing them, i did the assembly from bottom to top. everything went smooth. sorry to hear that ur motor didnt go as smooth.

I was running over 12:1 with no problems
Stock ignition with bkr7e plugs
Endyn rollerwaves
type r head and cams
stock injectors
stock fuel pump
raised fuel pressure
chipped ecu
16 degrees base ignition timing
made 196 hp and 141 ft lbs

I had no problems, i ran that setup for about 10k miles and sold the motor to a friend. It's still running strong.

J&S isnt needed IMO.
