Default Accord Exhaust rattle

I have a 94 Accord with the common internal exhaust pipe rattle. Is there a fix, other than replacing the exhaust pipe? I was concidering drilling a hole and inserting a screw threw the pipe but, that would likely cause an exhaust leak. Any thoughts appricated.

most likely the cat broke up, and chunks of it broke apart. those pieces of the cat bouncing around could make that sound, I have seen this on a pontiac grand am before.

are you talking about an exhaust leak or just a rattle in the system?

No exhaust leak, just a rattle in the system. It occurs at the onset of acceleration and then goes away once up to speed. The muffler shop said there is a section of the exhaust that has a "pipe within a pipe" and when the two separate over time, you wind up with the rattle. I have this same problem on both my 91 & 94 Accords---- it's not the muffler, it's within the actual exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe looks good from the outside, but rattles from within.

If that section of pipe is not bigger than normal then that is not a pipe in a pipe, you could have a center muffler (resonator). Do you have a metal bracket on the back of the block acting as a hanger for the front pipe, I have seen many of these break on Odyssey and rattle under certain conditions.

are you sure its not the infamous cat shield rattle?

If you only get it at like 2000ish rpms then i'd say its that. If it is or you think it is, just get a large hose clamp and clamp it back down. I wouldn't suggest taking it off, just incase you ever park somewhere with tall grass, you don't want a fire.

You guys were right on target! It was the Cat shield! All I did was to jar some copper pipe up there and the rattle has gone away! I have gotten so much bad work and information from a muffler shop (to remain nameless, but it starts with M and ends with an s) that I will never go back. You guys are great and I really appreciate the help. Charlie in Seattle
