Default 96 Accord Speedo and AC issues

I had to sell my 94 Integra (family is getting bigger) and bought a 96 Accord from my brother. I knew it had a couple of issues when I bought it. Anyways, I've got a couple of questions.

Issue #1 - The speedo/MPH gauge doesn't work 99% of the time. The VSS has been replacing, thinking that would solve the issue. No dice. The speedo reads at 20mph and just sits there. It will bounce around when the car is started and turned off. 1% of the time, it will work and show the correct speed and the odometer registers the correct mileage. I've searched and it looks like maybe a bad speedo gauge? I would need to replace the entire cluster, right? How can I make sure the used cluster works?

Issue #2 - The AC. My brother had spent 15+ hours trying to figure out why it won't work. Switch works, clutch will engage when jumpered, relay tests out fine (swapped with other fan relay to make sure), filled with Freon, etc... It seems like everything tests out OK indivually but once they are all put together, it doesn't work. Any ideas to help me out would be great!

#1 Please refer to the Accord FAQ, I made a fairly lengthy post as to how to fix it, as did awdgsx (with pictures) all you need is the green circuitry on the back of the speedometer

#2 what exactly doesn't work?

I looked in the FAQ and didn't see a fix for the speedo.

On the AC issue, it won't blow cold air. I'm going to check the blend door to make sure it's opening and closing correctly when the **** is turned.

Sorry, it's just under "Cluster Removal" but awd was having the exact problem you are having as am I.

As to the AC does it get cold over time? Or just never gets cold? I've heard that the **** itself can kinda slip some teeth so it's never turned 100% to cold

Thanks for the link. I was looking for something with speedo in it

Looks like I need a new cluster? That sucks. No other fixes for that problem?

AC-wise, it never gets cold. I'll check the **** as well!

Thanks for the help MuffinMan! I haven't been on HT in years but it's good to be back and get some good help and advice!

Hey np man, I went through quite the time trying to figure out my problem and narrowed it down the the cluster.

All you need is that back circuitry (it pulls right off) so hit up a junkyard 94-97 will work just fine.

Other option is ebay and buy the cluster there.

AWDGSX reported his cluster did not work when he swapped the speedos, but just swapping the backs of them had it up and running in no time, feel free to drop either of us a line about it

Another dumb question, I can get either the 5-speed (that what my car is) or an auto cluster, either should work if all I need is the back of the speedo.

Does AWDGSX have a write-up or a thread on his speedo cluster issues?

Thanks again!

Speedo will work from either one, I've fixed my 5spd's with an auto

In the accord faq, i think it's under electrical and then "cluster removal"

Well, I was tired of messing around with the AC and just needed it to work for this summer (hauling the kids around in 100+ degree heat). I ended up taking it to a shop and they just called. He said that the ECU was the problem and that he could engage the compressor with their shop diagnostic computer that bypassed the ECU. So, they are going to put in a junkyard ECU and we'll see if it works. I hope it works and they were right rather than blowing smoke

AC works!

But now I've got a check engine light. I'm hoping that it just has a code stored in it from the last car (junkyard ECU). Maybe a quick code flush and I should be good to go!

That and I have to clean the passenger side seat. The grease monkey working on the car got black all over the front seat.

Got the code read and reset. No CEL until the next day I was pretty sure it didn't have a CEL on when I left the shop the day I picked it up. He said something about the EVAP system. I also checked to make sure my gas cap was on tight.

So, I started browsing the FAQ and found this thread
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1490107 The pictures don't work anymore so I can't see which way to insert a paperclip to read the CEL.

What pisses me off is it didn't have a CEL when I took the car into the shop. Yeah, the AC now works but I have a bright yellow CEL glowing The guy at the shop made it sound like no big deal and it wasn't his problem about the CEL.

They did replace the ECU with a newer 97 Accord. Would an ECU for an F22B1 (vtec) engine work in my 96 F22B2?? I hope they got a computer from the same engine'd car

a vtech ecu will work in a non-vtech car, but the CEL will be on cause the ecu is not picking up the vtech solenoid signal.

on the passenger side of the car where the glove box and kick panel meet up, there is a blue 2-pin connector not plugtged into anything. pull that down, jump it with a paperclip, then turn your ignition on and count the blinks of the CEL. get the code it blinks out and look it up on the forums and then you will have your issue
