yes they are reliable, IT'S A HONDA! hx's are ok, if you just plan on saving gas.
but if you plan on doing some sort of swap, then it doesn't make a difference in trim level.

reliable my ****** ***. my cars nothing but ******* problems, atleast once a week. i got 2 in the last 3 days. window winders fucked... that happened friday.. today i was gunna head out to family values tour after work. ended up changing out my starter instead. then the battery it killed. im at 139K miles.. engines been replaced and transmission has been replaced. and bearing.. and also rear left side brake.. the little cylinder i guess u can call it that pushes the shoes out is leaking oil all over eveyrthing, so that side doesnt brake at all... every time u remove a clip you find out its 1 time use... even though i dont think it was meant to be. every bolt u try take off you might need a 3/4 impact at 120PSI tank pressure...
I ******* hate this thing with a goddamned passion... i wonder whats gunna expletive up on friday, its about due for something else then...
(also you can never get rid of the ******* rattles)

No, no no. Absolutely not.
Do not, under any circumstances, buy the CVT HX. You WILL regret it when (not if) the transmission goes bad. Replacements are neither affordable nor easy to find, and are not as easily converted to manuals as other automatic Civics are.
Now on the other hand, the 5-speed manual HX is a fine choice. We've seen no more problems with those than with other Civics; they're reliable if cared for and are inexpensive to operate, with great fuel economy.

No, theres only an automatic CVT transmission. The manual tranny is just a 5 speed transmission with nothing special.

The CVT is just what the HX gets instead of a normal automatic transmission. So the HX comes in a 5-speed manual OR with the CVT.
Meanwhile, the CX (3dr), DX (2dr, 3dr or 4dr), DX-V/SE/VP (4dr), EX (2dr or 4dr) and LX (4dr) all comes with either a 5-speed manual OR a 4-speed automatic. The GX only comes in a 4-speed automatic and of course the Si only comes with a 5-speed manual.
