Are you buying the Base 5spd, base Auto, or the Sh. If you are buying the base 5spd, you want to look for the 5th gear grind. To find that you will prolly need to have the car above 5,000rpm when you shift from 4th to 5th. If you feel a clunk/grind. Then the car has the grind. It's not all bad... I had it when i bought my 97 and i have removed the grind, all i needed to do was change the Tranny fluid to GM Syncromesh. That stuff is UNREAL!!! It works Amazing!!
The Auto/Sportshift, is a nice feature if you live with stop and go traffic, if you don't live with it go with a 5spd tranny the SH or the Base.
If you plan on modifing the car, the suspension or Turbo/Super/N20 you want to stay away from the SH. The computer has a fit with the added power.
The Base is the best platform for modding, the SH is really nice for STOCK autocrossing and the Auto is nice to have a Lude but not have to worry about the Clutch in traffic.
I recommend a Base 5spd!!! I have driven the Auto and it is noticeabley slower!!
Anything else, let me know.

hm... my 5th gear grinds a little too, nothing major but it pisses me off because i'm a perfectionist. actually a lot of preludes will eventualy start grinding a little.
so this GM stuff works? what viscosity did you use? and is it ok to use with our trannies, since honda uses motor oil to lube them. i've never heard about that stuff so i want to know if it's safe to use with my tranny and hopefully get rid of that little grind i got... thanx

any ways, my 5th gear grinds a little at high speeds (100+ MPH), i can't think of any trouble i've had other than the ******* up the engine somehow (could be the nitrous, but most like the AEM bypass valve), i love my lude and won't sell it unless someone offers me enough money

All you need to do to get the GM Syncromesh is go to your local GM(General Motors dealer, Parts dept) and ask for it. The oil is $9 per quart. You will need 2quarts of oil. I know that it sounds like alot... but that will save you $982 instead of buying a new Tranny.
It works!! Try it!!!
