Default What is the benefit of a short shifter?

I was thinking of replacing my stock shifter with a short shifter but is there any benefit to doing this or is it just look?

well...the shifts are shorter....

lol usually the feel of the shifter is also a little improved. Although, I personally dont really like ultra short shifters. They make everything kinda notchy and annoying.

Some people aren't co-ordinated, so they end up destroying their synchros. The timing from your foot on the clutch to your arm shifting will have to be altered. Less time to shift = less time to work the clutch basically.

I like the stock B series shifters. Back when I had a D series, i put a GSR shifter on my car. You have to modify where the shifter mounts to the linkage. You get a sawzall or a rotary metal saw and cut off about a 1/4'' peice on where the shifter bolts into the selector rod. You'll see if if you do it.

B series shifters have the most awesome feel...they're smooth, yet a little shorter and tighter than the D series shifters.

Skunk2 also makes a good short throw. Not too short and the bearings make the shifter feel great.

Lol. Yes. And if you have a good setup, the throws will be more positive.

People will say that they ruin synchros, which is just not true. Shortshifters don't ruin synchros, driving like an ******* all the time ruins synchros.

Unfortunately, they are addictive fun to use, and our transmissions are meant for econosport driving, and can be worn down pretty fast if you abuse the shifting. As long as you enjoy the shifter's advantages in moderation, and don't shift like Paul Walker all the time, you will really like one.

I personally have the Skunk2 dual bend shortshifter with the precise counterweighted ****. It is a dream to shift, which I tell everyone who has this kind of question.

I went all out and got it from Skunk2.com

Now, it's a good brand name, so you also shouldn't have a problem getting it from an eBay store for cheaper. Just make sure you get the proper weighted **** for it, and you'll love the feel.

I just hit the local backroads for some spirited driving myself, but I guess I should take my car to the track sometime too, huh?

And sometimes they add opsticle courses that you have to go through so you can become a better driver and drifter. And you dont have to worrie about messing up your paint job or bodykit.

Well, I could have saved some money and just gotten the setup from eBay...but I wanted to make sure I had good service in case something got messed up, so I opted for the more expensive option.

people make a way bigger deal out of them than necessary. they feel different and take a few seconds to get used to (compared to stock), but in the end they still just allow you to change gears at basically the same speed. just more comfortably in my opinion. as a side note - watch out for your exhaust piping/resonator.

A short shifter does precisely what its name implies, it reduces the throw in between gears. Not only will it lessen the throw from second to third, third to fouth..etc, but it will also make the gearbox feel "tighter," by creating less lateral play in the shifter. Often times a short shifter will also sit lower.

While this topic is up... does anybody know anything about Fidanza or B&M shifters? http://www.robearracing.com has shifters from both of those brands for half the price of the Skunk 2, should I just go "all out" (lol) and get the skunk 2?

I have a skunk2 dual bend on my 00 civic and limited ed. 10 years or whatever shift ****, and i love it. I love the weight of the **** and love how tight the shift is. It took me a few mins to get use to it, but love it now! It sits at such a good spot i love it. B&M are nice too, but i would just wait till you find one on here or craigs list, i got my set up for cheap here in socal! And its such a smooth shift!
