Default 1991 civic speed sensor issue. scratch that I searched for about another hour and found it

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the whole speed sensor assembly out and go to honda and ask for what parts I need because they told me to bring it in so they could tell me what parts needed to be ordered. It is the cable operated speed sensor and the cable broke at the trans and i got the small steel tubing off with some needle nose, but does the rest come off and if so how? I am so confused and wold like to know how fast I am going and to get vtec working. Please help. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I can take a picture and post what I am working with if it helps any.

the cable is held into the transmission with a "C" clip.

to remove the entire speed sensor, there are 1 or 2 10mm bolts. unbolt it, and it pulls straight up

The speed sensor on a EF civic is not 2 10mm bolts it is a different assembly. I can take a picture, but it does not come out after the removal of 2 10mm bolts. Its the speed sensor in the trans that uses the speed cable to the gauge cluster.

On mine there is a part that slides over it all that is on the cable, you pull that up and there is a c clip that holds it in place by resting on a notch. You take that out and the speed sensor slides right out.

i think after 172,000 miles it just sort of got itself stuck in there so its hard as hell to pull out. I got the end of the old speedo cable broken off in there so if I can get that out I can put the new one i got from honda in and fix my **** hopefully that will make it stop throwing my VSS light and my Vtec solenoid light too.

this will not solve his problem cuase without the vss working the heart of the motor (vtec) will not work.

Oh so true.

I ended up not removing the entire VSS from the trans and just finding the tiniest pair of needle nose I had and getting the stuck piece of speedo cable out. It wasn't until after I got the new cable that I had any idea what could be stuck and whatnot. But today I just went for broke and got it. Swap is finally done other than strange *** trans noises. Taking it to trans guy tomorrow. Vtec works and finally I know how fast I'm going. I appreciate all the feedback. Thanks again.

Generally to get the whole cable drive unit out of the tranny, you have to drive it out from inside the tranny.

Yes, I have saved a few

Well I might be getting my whole tranny redone due to it acting up and "falling" out of gear and just bogging while coasting in 4th gear at about 4,000rpms so I'm planning to take it to get looked at today. If it needs to be rebuilt I'll see how much and I might just have them build it up if it has to be rebuilt as it is.

Trans guy said I'm better off "Driving it till it blows up" then investing in a new one". So I don't know what trans to buy seeing as the 88-91 trans isn't really geared for the JDM D15 and the fact I have a cable driven cluster and anything newer than 91 is electronic. I'll just have to see what to get when the time comes. Thanks again.

for future reference, http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ will have every assembly broken down so you can see how many pieces there are supposed to be.

I looked at a similar site and found nothing about the speed sensor assembly just as I did not there, but thanks for the site for future reference.

Once you take the 10mm bolt out I used a pair of channel lock pliers
grabed it and twisted till I could pull up, Should come out.
I used the same sensor on my ls cable tranny, they pull straght up.
good luck

their pics are all messed up right now, but the VSS for a 4G is in the gauge cluster, so the thing in the trans is just a speedometer cable drive.

Right I needed to get the remnant of the speedo cable out of it, but luckily my tiny *** pair of pliers worked perfectly and installed my new cable so all is well now, but thanks for all of the help guys. Truly.
