Default My project log: 1989 Civic Si

Since everyone else has a project log, I thought I'd start my own. This log will be around for a while, since it is going to take some time to finish this project.

In the last few years I've grown really tired of the rust and bondo on my current 1988 Civic, and I've always wanted a clean EF. In 2005 I built an LS/VTEC for it and had fun racing it for the past few seasons, but I've never really addressed any body work other than doing the odd ghetto rust repair myself.

Every time I saw one of you guys post a nice one up I got jealous. I even picked up the back half of a rust free EF in the hopes of having the rear quarter panels welded in and the car repainted.

I purchased this Civic shell from a fellow that I used to race with. He had the whole body done in 2003, and had a JDM front end, side skirts, rear spoiler, etc put on. The car was painted Lexus IS300 Graphite Grey Pearl, and was babied after that. It had a built turbo B16A, but it was hardly driven. The seller decided he wanted to go faster, and set up a dedicated drag car, but he couldn't find a one piece front end for an EF. He finally decided to part it out and sell it, and move onto bigger things.

The JDM pieces went to a friend of mine, and the car was put up for sale a few months later. I don't really have the money for it right now (going to Europe), but a friend of mine, Bluelight, was very kind and lent me the cash until I can repay him. He insisted that I jump on the car as the deal was too good to pass up.

Here are the initial pics:

The plan is to swap the LS/VTEC and the interior from my current car, pick up some DX interior parts and a D16A6 swap for my current car, and sell it. I should be able to make my money back, the deal I got for the shell was unbeatable.

Here are some of the goodies that came with the car:

Art Morrison Roll Cage and harnesses (expired)
Alarm with 4 door keyless door handles and power locks
Pedals
Traction Bars
New rear trailing arm bushings
Rear Disc swap with SS lines
Camber kit
Grant steering wheel with removable hub, A pillar gauge pods
Rear battery conversion with kill switch
Walbro 255lph pump and relay, with SS line from the tank to the engine bay.
EG rad with FAL fan
B series shift linkage

The car was setup to be in the 10's, and be fully NHRA legal. I wont hit 10's, that's for sure, but eventually I'll build up the LS/VTEC and juice it, and try to hit low 12's or high 11's.

I will post plenty of tech tips when I get to work on the car.

Thanks!

The car doesn't have a speck of rust on the body, and I dont think it was driven in the rain at all after the paint job. Even the underbody is mint, and the wheel wells look like they've been freshly coated.

I forgot to mention that I'm going to buy OEM Honda front fenders, and find a stock 89 Si hood, bumper, and lip to finish the front end

thanks!

the only issue with the body is that under the passenger side door there are some scuff marks where the sideskirts had been installed. even the wheelwells and underbody are absolutely mint.

take a guess about how much I paid!

Sweet! I think my paint has a bit more pearl in it, it really shines in the sun.

I paid under 1500 and more than 1000 (cdn).

Nice! Another local! I look forward to racing with you next season

That's a helluva find for under $1500. I don't remember seeing it posted anywhere. If I did, it would be in my garage right now

NHRA rules state that you need to have an external kill switch and vent to the outside. This car was built to be 100 percent compliant

I dont know that I'll be racing next season, it might not be ready by then

It was posted, but we jumped on it pretty much right away. Have you been out to Mission at all this year? I raced my 88 hatch a few times this year. Rusty, no hood, etc.

As for the Merkur comment, well i wasn't sure if I liked the spoiler myself but it's really grown on me. If I pick up an upper spoiler like the one that was originally on the car, it would look really good.
