loud=performance???
a lot of times people make that assumption but its completely false. I can have a stock dc5 and put a crazy ricer exhaust on it and it will be super loud BUT that does NOT mean i have a ridiculous engine.
On the other hand though most of the time people with completely built and stacked engines and cars are very loud. that is not so much to do with their exhaust but with the pistons, cams, headers, ect. that they are running.
You can have a quiet exhaust on a stock car and then take that same exhaust and put it on a built engine and it will sceam but in general a loud exhaust doesnt mean that the car is stacked out and ready to run 10s or 11s

a car with a stock exhaust manfiold and downpipe with just and exhaust on the end is not going to be as loud as a car with header/ high flow cat (or straight through)/ exhaust
Its ALOT louder when you have a race header/ high flow cat/ exhaust, and you put down more power too.
The level of noise gives you a good guess as to what extent the car is modified

There is 2 types of loud. There are the performance loud, and the ricey loud. Either way you look at it sound does not create horsepower. But if your into cars you should be able to tell the difference between the two.
You have the SOHC non-vtec Civic with a 3ARacing muffler.
The you have a 5.0 Saleen Mustang with a cat-back exhaust.
Both cars might be loud, but the Saleen loud sounds like performance, the civic loud sounds like just noise.

of course if you have studied any physics you would know that the sound is just a form of energy that is being released from the engine when it comes out the exhaust ... as everyone else is pointing out just because you make a lot of sound doesnt mean your getting a lot of power out of the motor ... now fully built motors do sound loud and that is all the extra energy being created coming mostly out of the engine itself rather then all the sound being MADE or WASTED (depends on how you look at it) by the exhaust ... also if you think about it the more sound your exhaust makes and the weaker your motor the more energy is being wasted making the sound rather than moving you forward ... but its not always the case ... now if we take for example a car that has all its cats in and small exhaust piping the sound it pretty quiet and the power it pretty low ... this is because the engine is not breathing enough and its kind of choking ... so by increasing the size of the piping and getting high flow cats (since i dont like test pipes and dont ask why) you allow the engine to breath alot better which gives you a bit of power and lessen up the back pressure on you engine ... also by doing so you increase the sound of the exhaust do to all the release of energy ... of course having no back pressure is sometimes bad thats why you shouldnt run open header which just creates too much sound and almost zero to negative performance ... but thats just a physics kind of view on it ...

true for some but a silencer can help tune down the sound ... hi powers come with one and i cant hear my exhaust over my intake ... kinda weird but maybe if i opened my windows ... lol

Me too...I have a HKS Hi-power with a silencer on my ep and I could barely hear my exhaust...the only thing I hear is my Injen SP cai

this question is kinda hard to answer, if u compared my 03 supercharged rsx-s with dc race headers and greddy evo2 exhaust... with this dumbass bengali kid that has a 89 4 door integra ls also automatic.. n i dunno where the hell he got his exhaust, its louder then mine and there was about 10 ppl sayin that his car would smoke mine...not true at all i was laughin my *** off on the floor... so what im trying is it dependes on the piping size

try rolling your windows down ... i kinda hear something ... of course my second cat is burnt out and i get back fire alot so my hi-power is kind of a fart can at times ...

Take off everything from the headers down, and it'll be 200000x as loud...
Tried that with my 600RR... turned it on when I had the muffler and mid-pipe taken out... I think I cracked 2 windows at my friends bodyshop when I rev'd it to 14000

when you put a header on and exhaust its going to get loud, but depending on the combination of parts you put on will affect how loud it gets. The power gains could be more, could be less, again it comes down to what parts you use.
