Fitting a 88-89 d16a1 into a 91 hatchback.
Ok. here is the deal... I have looked around on countless sites trying to find a write up on how to put this motor into a 4gen, and i cant seem to find one... so i already have the motor in the shop getting built but other than that... i know i must rig up a driver side mount i bielieve... and i'm not exactly sure what else i will have to do to make this work... i know its a odd ball build but.. its somthing diffrent and i dont have a lot of money to go spend on a nice b-series but anyways if anyone has a write up or somthing to show me step by step on how this motor will work in that chassis i will greately appreciate it... and my car is a 91 hatchback dx (so i know to do the multi point thing) and i know there is a great deal of wiring as well.. but... reply with information please Thank you.

I don't know if there is a "good" way to make that motor fit... the USDM ZC's that came in the 1st gen integra are significantly different from the JDM ZC's that came in foreign market 4th gen civics.. somebody speak up if they know how though.. Those old integra motors are cheap as dirt

Yeah, its not going to work, the mounts are different than a zc. I don't know if someone makes mounts now to put that engine in a 4th gen civic or not.

Well the thing is i already got the motor put together well its in the shop with crower I-beams polished crank and pistons and stuff build bottom end... and i already put all this money into it to put in my hatchback... I know its got to work! Positive feed back please! i'm planing on rigging up that mount(s) so getting it inside the car will be a probobem but over come, and i was also wondering if the si tranny will bolt up to that motor? If not i think im safe to say that the dx tranny will bolt up part of the way but like one bolt i think... but as long as it holds.. i'l live with it... Oh.. and this motor is setup for a lot of Boost.
well, if you wanna keep that motor you could always pick up a 3rd gen civic.. pretty much drop in with them, they can also use alot of other 1st gen integra parts
sorry I don't have any better info

If wishes were fishes we'd all be eating fish tacos. But none of what you have is going to work or even be worth it. Why did you build an engine without knowing if it was going to work in your car in the first place? Good luck getting it mounted, and as far as I know only the d16a1 tranny will work. If you get it all going be sure to let us all know, but good god by the time you're done it's going to cost more than an LS or b16 swap would have, you know?
well first off he got ripped off by a local guy and didnt know how difficult it would be till after he had bought it. but it isnt impossible.
i understand it's not easy but i dont think it would be all that bad. just take some time and fab work. i think his point in asking is to talk to guys that have done the swap before; to get some helpfull tips on things to look out for, or be aware of.
im just here to clear things up. i volunteered my garage, and help to do the swap. whether we get info on here or not i promise you (unless somebody talks him into getting another motor) we will get it in there and running. just may take some time. im not at all claiming to be a professional, just mechanically minded and willing to try it.

SORRY TO BREAK IT TO YOU BUT ITS A NO GO!
a zc is fine but its that driverside mounts and the way its placed on your motor thats the problem
and no! no company make mounts for this

I can't say as I've ever seen this swap ever done, and I'm thinking at this point in the game that it's for a reason. If you two can get it done more power to you and I'd like to see it, since I never have, but I think it would be a better investment to just buy a 1st gen teg with a blown motor and have at it.

Know how to weld? If not, sell the motor now and start new.
You've just gotta fab up some mounts for it, or somehow adapt the stock mounts to work with that tranny. I'd recommend you take a look at some 86-89 integras at wrecking yards and see how they mount. You're going to have to figure out how to place the engine in so that it's straight, doesn't lean, and has good angle for the axles.
Personally, I wouldnt go through the trouble since you can get a well running ZC for under 600 bucks these days.
I would sell that motor, pick up a cheap ZC, use an Si Tranny and bolt it all in using stock mounts, and you're good to go.

Exactly. You have made a lot of difficulties for yourself.
Sell the motor, and get one that drops in...or....sell the car and get a third gen civic.
good luck.............

I had a d16a1 in my CRX, when it died I swapped in a a6. Seriously the a6>a1 by a long shot. I hated that motor, except for the fact that retards thought I had a buff DOHC in my CRX.
Ya, i know this is somthing way out of the ordinary and abit dificulty but i guess i like challenges
i'v already got so much money into this motor (built bottom end with crower I-beam rods and stuff) that if i got rid of it i would not be able to make the money off of it than the money i got in it, i mean what is the diffrence between the true ZC and the A1! best to my knowledge it would be bigger cams, and intake plenum.. and i think thats it.. i'm planing on getting turbo cams and i could get me a zc intake manifold.. then would that get me above 130hp i think thats there stock hp.?

d16a1 = 118 hp
dohc and sohc vtec ZC = 130
Sohc non-vtec ZC = 110
d16a6 = 110
Go to DHRacing.com and look under info for what engines came in what with what specs. ( hp/tq etc. )
Also problem with d16a1 is not only mount but the tranny as stated before.
I have a dohc zc and i know that the halfshaft off a d16a1 will NOT work with my dohc zc traany. I belive only a d16a1 tranny will work. Tough to find...but not impossiable. I give the kid credit for doing something different.
-Edit- er...if possiable why not use stock si tranny? as long as u use same axels for it. that would work i think. somone correct me if im wrong.

lol... ya well the good news about all this is i'v already found a whole write up on this swap so i know how to do everything..and its for sure possible, um... and i'v got on an integra thread with them building these motors and there very successfull, i just want somthing diffrent from everyone else ^^ somthing thats really hasn't been done before... it will work out.
Where's this writeup? I'd really like to see what has to be done to do this swap as far as mounts go. I ruled this one out in 97 because I knew even back then it was too big a PITA to be worth it.
