I Have a 97 Accord with H22a. Today while driving I heard a weird noise. I popped the hood and see a partially shredded power steering belt. I have AEM power pulleys if that matters. It looks as if the power steering belt has been rubbing on the alternator pulley, but there is room between them when I look at it. The alternatror pulley looks like the belt has been rubbing on it, but it would have to move about 1/4-1/2 inch to even come close to rubbing. Would the engine move enough to allow them to rub? What might cause the belt to shred? Everything was nice and tight. Did I have the belt too tight? Not tight enough? I can get pictures later tonight as I am at work right now.

 

look at the belts and make sure the alt is mounted right. What im trying to say is the belt must be in a straight line to the next pully or you will need to shim the alt. the belt won't like any left or right deflection.

 

Is it possible that the belt wasn't on correctly? I have seen guys put belts on that are a rib off. One whole rib gets shredded off.

 

It's got 4 ribs and was on fine as far as I know. I'll check the deflection today after it gets light out. Last night it looked as though one rib was being sheared off and then running a groove over. The rib that is coming off would now be off the pulley and the whole belt shifter over one rib. Belt was and still is firm to push on.

 

I went out and looked at the belt. It's not over the edge, but did move over one groove on the pulley. It appears to be rubbing down on the bottom pulley at the bottom of the engine. There are 2 pulleys side by side, one big and one smaller one on the outside of it. Is there any way to move the smaller pulley out about 1/4 inch? It looks to be connected and all one piece. If it is off center a little bit, that makes sense with what someone said about moving over a little.
