Failed emissions (searched)
I have been searching for a few hours now but unfortunately I have so many little issues I really don't know which ones to focus on and which ones are distractions so I'm hoping someone with more experience can pick the wheat from the chaff.
Engine is a 1994 H22A swapped into a Rover 600...
I failed my UK emissions test with the following results:
Fast Idle test 1
RPM 2657
CO 0.86% (limit is 0.3%)
HC 57ppm (limit is 200)
Lambda 0.982
Fast Idle test 2
RPM 2614
CO 0.66% (limit is 0.3%)
HC 42ppm (limit is 200)
Lambda 0.988
Natural Idle test
RPM 760
CO 0.043% (limit is 0.5%)
Here are the answers to most of the obveous questions:
- There is a stock cat on the car
- The engine was stripped and rebuilt ~ 1000miles ago but is standard appart from induction kit
- I AM getting a CEL occationally (1 - O2 sensor) however I have swapped the O2 sensor for a second hand one (and retrained the ECU), could it still be faulty?
- I have checked lambda wiring
- There is a slight hissing coming from around the inlet manifold however I can't find a leak...
- When the car is on idle and upto temp it stays @ 750rpm then for no reason quickly jumps to 850rpm and runs very rich. Then goes back to 750 and returns to normal. Is this a serious idle problem?
So far on my list to check:
EGR valve
MAP sensor
lambda?
Really after some suggestions from Honda vets.
Thanks
James

I cant remember how to read lambda...
but your CO% tells me that you're running very rich.
find and repair that vacuum leak...
you're still getting CEL even after swapping the O2 sensor? did you reset the ECU after you swapped the O2 sensor?
do you have a known good ECU to install and recheck?
edit: what the hell is a rover 600?

Yeah I have reset the ECU a few times since changing the lambda. I can get hold of another ECU, is there much chance its that?
A Rover 600 is basically an Accord, there were made side by side and have few mechanical differences. Here is mine (which is obveously not factory spec) - http://jynx.geezas.com/SMC/P1010001.JPG
And just so you can see, this is what it now looks like under the bonnet - http://jynx.geezas.com/forum/h22-3/finishedbay.JPG
Thanks for your reply

that is disgusting! why would they do that to a honda
and whats a bonnet? is that the word for hood over there? make sure ur sensors are good, if its none of that stuff, u might wanna look into seafoam to reduce emissions

Ok tonight I:
- bleed the CTS
- Timed the car (it was slightly out)
- Check the throttle wasn't sticking
- Retrained the ECU
It seems to have solved the idle issue, but the car is still rich and I got CEL #1 on the way home.
I have a spare EGR which I will clean and fit tomorrow.
I do remember now that when we did the rebuild I didn't clean it - so fingers crossed. Still not found the vacuum leak :/
Oh and yes, we have bonnets and boots - hoods and trunks :D
