D16Y8 Tranny question
here are the specs 1997 EX coupe D16Y8, I just purchased from original owner, 150k miles on orig clutch/everything...
Recently i've been hearing a louder and louder grinding coming from within my trans. Im guessing its either the pilot or throwout bearing. It also has been poping out of second at wierd times. none the less i called around and asked how much a rebuild would be and i was quoted anywhere from 500 to 1300. I guess synchros arent cheap... My question is what is the majority doing, are you guys throwing down the coin for the rebuild, replacing with a different trans... (B16-B18 if possible) or buying from a junker?
Any help would be greatly apreciated, Its a DD and will only be seeing some minor bolt-ons if that helps.. Well, untill i can afford the proper boost setup.

You can't use B series transmissions on that car, only a D will bolt up. So a B16 or B18 won't work.
If it's grinding and popping out you're probably looking at more than just the throwout bearing.
I would just get a new Y8, but take it down, crack it open, see if you can find out what's wrong.

ok thanks for the clearification on the b-series.
Just so i dont get taken to the cleaners whats the going rate for a Y8 used trans?
I'm thinking about just throwing another used/good condition one in there, then rebuilding the one i have now slowly (this is my dd) to mate to a longblock Y8 and slowly building a snail setup.

That'd be from a scrapyard or private sale.

It's easier IMO. My Y8 trans is bad too, haven't been driving my EX in a few weeks. Gotta get a trans for it, mine is doing the same thing (grinding in every gear, even in neutral), it's probably just a bad input shaft bearing, but it's been grinding horribly for like 1.5k+ miles so chances are there's broken pieces all over the inside of the trans. So I'ma pick another one up whenever I get the hell around to it and throw it in. They're not hard to replace, and if you can't do it, a shop can do it for like <$150 labor.

Thanks i'll give that site a try.
Im ok on the swap, I've done a few in my day. but when it comes down to rebuilding a trans i get completely lost. I just hope this one will last untill i get a new one or my butt is catching a bus. hehe. well bro thanks for all the help. Good luck on your situation.

That's almost a good place to start - H-T market place is, but as for craigslist, most of the deals as far as trans goes are kinda fishy
