Default Clutch adjustment problem 1987 HF

I just acquire this CRX HF that supposedly has a fairly new clutch kit installed. There doesn't appear to be freeplay even though I've backed off the clutch adjustment nut as far as seems possible. The clutch engages very high off the floorboard, about an inch from the top. I think that this clutch kit already has enough miles on it that it would have burned up the throwout bearing if it were constantly under pressure (just a guess, I read somewhere that a throwout bearing will only last about 8 minutes when under pressure). Any suggestions ? Thanks.
