Default 4.7 Final Drive for H2B setup - Yes or No

I have seen everyone pretty much staying with the stock 4.4 and doing well but my question is down the road do you think eventually something like a 4.7 would be better?

Basically im building my H2b setup now and just wondering while the trans is already apart if i should just throw one in there. To start the motor will just have bolt ons and 22 inch slicks @ track. But this winter will be a nice big, high cr motor so again im just wondering if i should throw it in now while im putting in the lsd.

Any thoughts?

I would only go with a 4.7fd is I was building something with high compression and mostly for track. bigger final drive also means bigger tires which results in a bigger contact patch you will probably be at around 4.5k rpms on the freeway.

well i was definitely going to step the slick size up next year with the bigger motor, but i just didnt want the 4.7 to be basically "overkill" for now, which is what it seems like you're saying it might be.

thanks . i appreciate the input

What trans are you starting out with? GSR or B16/ITR trans?

Gears effect were your land point are and what your driving on the freeway at not the bloody FD

Anyway read the link it is all explained their hope we can cap this miss information

i believe the b16 has the better "gearing" then the gsr right? If not that would be preferable!

Anyway in answer to your question about final drives if you read and FULLY understand the above link i have given you then you will understand when i tell you get at the least a 4.9 final drive and a 5:1 if you can afford it or bigger!

I pwned that writeup
http://bensebuilt.livejournal.com/2006/01/08/

lol

nah i got sick of typing the same thing over and over and over so i created that writeup.

nah what you can do is go here and find out an estimated trap speed
http://www.stealth316.com/2-calc-hp-et-mph.htm

then if it's like 118mph, make your 4th gear end at like 120mph.

if you're revingto like 8100 you may want to just use a stock 4.4 b16/itr gearing.

if you're using gsr trans then i'd run the 4.7

just my $0.02

ok, a '98+ JDM ITR has a 4.785 FD, most people think that will put your 5th gear cruising mph at a high rpm..... but in comparison to the USDM ITR 4.4FD transmission it's actually within a few mph.... You see, the jdm and usdm both have the same 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ratios but with the jdm having a 4.785 it makes gears 1-3 shorter than that of the usdm.... But on the other hand the jdm has a taller 4th and 5th gear than that of the usdm, combine a taller 4th & 5th with a 4.785 and you get something close enough to compare to a usdm tranny... I hope this makes sence to at least one person... but to make a long story short when comapreing a 4.4fd ITR with a 4.785fd ITR, basically 1-3 are shorter and 4th & 5th are within a few mph.. What ever you decide just keep the gears short and close as possible and gear it to finish the 1320 on the top of 4th

If your motor is stock with bolt on's..... I'm going to have to agree with the majority and say stick with the 4.4 tranny on 22" slicks.

Build the tranny around the motor when you get that CR monster in there. Shameless plug......"My MFactory 4.928 final drive really helped my ET's especially when you need bigger slicks".... Good Luck!!!
