What is VtecE Stand for and what does it do

There is a JDM D15B motor with Vtec-e (there might be others, but this is the only one I know of for sure). Basically there are 2 vtec solenoids. The first stage the motor runs on only 12 VALVES in economy mode. Then the second stage the motor switches to 16 VALVES, the first solenoid is active. Finally the third stage is the vtec stage. The motor was made for good fuel economy thats about it. The block is the same as a regular Vtec D15B, but the head is completly diffrent.

I think he means Valves Not Cylinders

yea... he means valves... u could probably call the k20a3 a VTEC-E as well.... it performs like one.

d16y5...civic hx motor....vtec e....41.5 mpgs on average for me....but still a quick little car when need be.....sure wish my civic had 16 cylinders

I think you're thinking of the D15B, not the D16B (which doesn't have VTEC-E).

In the SOHC VTEC-E implementation, only one intake cam-lobe is implemented on the camshaft. Actually it is really a flat "ring". In operation this means the relevant rocker arm will not be activated causing the engine to effectively work in 12-valve mode. This promotes a swirl action during the intake cycle. VTEC is used to activate the inactive valve, making the engine work in 16-valve mode in more demanding and higher rpm conditions. Honda was able to implement air-fuel mixture ratios of more than 20:1 in VTEC-E during the 12-valve operating mode. The SOHC VTEC-E engined EG-series Civic ETi is able to return fuel consumptions of as good as 20km/litre or better!!

SOHC VTEC implemented for power is often mistaken as SOHC VTEC-E which is implemented for economy. It is worthwhile to note that the 1.5l SOHC VTEC-E used in the JDM Honda Civic ETi produces 92ps. This is in fact less than that produced by the standard 1.5l SOHC engine's 100ps which uses dual Keihin side-draft carburettors. SOHC VTEC in the D15B produces 130ps. This is 30% more than the standard SOHC implementation ! </TD></TR></TABLE>

Yeah sorry about all that. I do mean the D15B and definetly valves not cylinders. I was reading another thread while replying to this one and got it all messed up. Now I feel stupid.

Na the d15b after 95 has the 3stage vtec. D15b is NOT vtec E. D15b is jdm. The usdm vx has vtecE

Umm yes it is. There is more than one engine configuration with the block stamp D15B in good old JDMland.

92-95 vx d15z1, 92-95 jdm d15b, 96-00 jdm d15b has it, 96-00 d16y5 hx have vtece. basicaly it uses a solenoid pressure swithc all the normal vtec schmiel, but the motor runs on 1 intake valve/cylinder until it hits a certain rpm when 16v mode is engaged. any arguments?

vtecE, E means "Enhance"its a nice motor but it saves gas, the power on that motor is on high rpms, d16y8 is the best to go with.

I would disagree entirely.

The max tq is at 4500 rpm, and the max hp is at 5500. If you've ever driven a VX, you would know taking it to redline is a joke. Taking it to about 5800 is the max you should take it too (though I think redline is at about 6200?).

E means "economy".

The d15z1 vtec-e motor in the Honda VX (92-95 hatch in the US) is an amazing motor for fuel economy. There isn't another motor I would ever install in a civic to get better mileage (other than possibly the one from a crx HF or civic std).

Just wanted to clear up some misinformation.

Wow, so much bad information. I'll try to sum up the correct info and 100% guarantee it's accuracy.

First VTEC-E engine Honda put out was the D15Z1 in the 92-95 Civic VX. Below 2500 RPM, one of the intake valves runs on a low lobe. It barely opens enough to prevent fuel from pooling up against it, but technically, it's open. Less air in low RPM is a good thing. But the main idea is to promote a swirl in the combustion chamber that ensures every single fuel molecule will get burned. With a wideband O2 sensor capable of detecting extremely lean fuel mixtures, the ECU is able to run ratios as lean as 20:1. Above 2500 or under heavy load, the engine runs both intake lobes together. Redline on a VX is really low. I'll have to look at my cluster when I get home, but it's right around 6000 RPM and the engine has stopped making power way before then. One interesting thing about the Z1 is that it features roller rockers to keep valvetrain losses extremely low. The cluster has a little green arrow telling you when to upshift so that you can stay in 12 valve mode. The Z1 head is a very different design than the Z6 or B designations found in the DX. The CX is an 8 valve motor with no valve switching technology at all.

The Y8 is VTEC, not VTEC-E. VTEC on a SOHC only affects the intake valves, not the exhaust. So on a VTEC-E, it would be 3 valves per cylinder, not 1.

The CRX HF achieved it's mileage mainly by way of the lightweight chassis and not so much the engine.

In 96 came the HX D16Y5, which again is VTEC-E with roller rockers, but this time a 1.6 and the same exact head as a D16Y8, just a different valve train. Same intake manifold except with the addition of EGR. The automatics were CVT, and the ECU kept the motor at peak hp RPM under heavy acceleration, then at low RPM under light load cruising for max economy. In theory far superior to a conventional 5 speed, but in practice the CVT can not handle a lot of power over stock. Despite having a lower peak hp, the D16Y5 paired with a D16Y8 5 speed transmission has the same acceleration as a D16Y8.

In Japan and other countries but NEVER IN THE US the Vi and VTi came with a "d15b" featuring 2 VTEC solenoids. This is an OBD2 motor only. There is no OBD1 3 stage VTEC. This motor doesn't have roller rockers that the Z1 and Y5 motors had. Basically this motor is a combination of the Y5's VTEC-E and the Y8's VTEC, on a 1.5 block. The power curve comes up much sooner in the RPM than the Y8, making this a great motor for a street car. They also paired this motor up with the CVT on the automatics. BY NO MEANS NOT ALL D15B'S ARE 3 STAGE VTEC'S. And there was never a 3 stage VTEC designated "ZC". In Europe and other countries, this motor had a full engine code designation much like USDM motors have, but at this moment the exact code escapes me.

To my knowledge, there are no VTEC-E motors after that. They have basically been replaced by electric and hybrid technology.

96-00 civic hx is rated 37/43 mpg

the best I've gotten out of my hx was 435-440 miles per tank and have done so on more than just one occasion. now what I'd like to see is a y5 in a hatch now that would be awesome for some good mileage.

i got my car with the d16y5 and now have a d15b i cant get away from vtec-e, although i dont have it hooked up on my current setup just regular vtec

anyone know when the vtec-e is supposed to be on in the d15b with 3 stage

i might try and hook it up and se what it does
