Any ideas on where I should go?
ok, ive searched and can't seem to find a good solution. Heres the situation, I have a 2001 itr with jdm DC 4-1 headers, intake, and a sms test pipe to stock muffler.
Ok, so the car smokes everytime i go WOP, or anything over 4500 rpm. Its all black smoke and I know the car burns about a quart of oil every tank.
Im thinking its the test pipe, so I want to put the stock cat back on, but I dont think it will bolt up with the jdm piece right? Should I jsut go all stock and see if that fixes the problem? How much should i expect to pay for a hi flow cat from a muffler shop?
the car has 80k miles btw and seems to run ok otherwise, I think I do need a major tune-up soon though.

Call Dave Stadilus from SMSP, and he'll make you cat specific for your setup. He's a super nice guy, excellent quality workmanship, and good prices as well.
How is a test pipe going to cause you to burn oil?
Start with these 2 simple tests...
Compression test
Leak down test
Those 2 will tell you where the oil is coming from in the first place.

While I'll totally agree that Dave is a super stand up guy... you still can't fix an oil burning problem by doing ANY exhaust work... It's got to be coming from somewhere to start with.

I'm at 100k, and I know I have a ring issue.
WOT I put out a HUGE plume of black smoke. I highly doubt that a test pipe is going to make that much of a difference if there is no problem to begin with. Mine happens with a CAT too...
Perform the above tests and post back the results. It's most likely either one of two things... valve seals or piston rings.

It wouldn't be the springs, it would be the valve seals...
There is no average or guestamate here. If valve seals, personally I would pull the head and do a complete valve job including the seals, some just do the seals themselves.
If rings, then why? Broken, or worn or what? If worn, how is the bore? Does it need to be bored and over sized pistons put in?
Then you have to factor in different labor rates for places. I presume you'll be taking this somewhere to have the work done, so they would be able to give you the quotes. But do the compression test and leak down first.
