Default What are some good (relatively cheap) upgrade i can do to my del sol?

I lost in a race to my friends ford taurus so now i want some more hp in my car.

I don't know what my dad put in the car before he gave it to me, but im sure its all stock, except for the wires. The engine is a Vtech enging 6 cyl i think. and the car is a automatic.

Any ideas on what i can do to make it faster?

tell him to race you downhill with the engine off.

anyways, you comparing a V6 to a V4. No competition. add a type R sticker. it gives you 500hp.

lol, 6 cylinder... Yeah, either you have an NSX motor or an accord motor in there..

A 1998 ford taurus has a v6, 3.0L 200HP motor. No wonder you lost. Sure, a ford taurus is heavier, but it's putting out way more HP/TQ than you are. Plus, you're automatic so that doesn't help any.

No cheap upgrade will allow you to win against that car. Turbo or Swap motors

Ford's Taurus SHO (Super High Output) model had an eleven-year run. In 1989 it was introduced with a Yamaha-built 3.0L V6 and only with a 5-speed transmission available. By the end-of-the-line in 1999 Yamaha was working with Ford on building the SHO's 3.4L V8 motor. Only a four-speed automatic was available in the later years.

The del sol doesn't have a V configuration, it has an I configuration.

It would be a "straight 4" or an "I4."

You probably have the base model, the B7, there's nothing you can do really except swap or turbo. Stock 5th and 6th gen Hondas aren't fast, accept it.

Depending on the model, you have one of these stock engines (s-model 1.5L 102hp, si-1.6L 125 sohc vtec, vtec 1.6L 160hp dohc vtec). Since you have an automatic, you have either the s or si (auto not available w/ dohc vtec).

As mentioned before, start with i/h/e then go from there. If you have the 1.5L, I've heard of sols getting good results w/ the installation of a A6 cam from the 88-91 crx si. These are realatively cheap to find from sources like craigslist (where I picked mine up from) or junkyards.

With an automatic, your options are more limited if you don't want to spend the $$ to upgrade or do a auto to manual swap. I've also read about companies like TCI that make torque converters for Honda auto trans and Level 10 that do complete upgrades to Honda auto trans. My understanding is that both are VERY pricey options...haven't heard any good or bad about either.

Do a little research...you might decide to go with a different model sol, if you really like them, or just go with another Honda w/ more potential for upgrades.

Did I just see someone say V4....wow.....

Just some quick noob education here:

In order to have a "V" anything, the cylinder configuration has to be in a "V" shape, therefore if you'd take a quick look at any Honda 4 cylinder you'd notice it's all inline.

VTEC=Variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control

No H's in that acronym.

Well He Said The Motor Has Vtec on it so i would think it would be a d16z6 if you want to upgrade it cheap put a home made turbo on it. you can find the info on it at http://www.homemadeturbos.com i think that is the link but any way you can use the 92-95 civic cx or vx exhaust manifold with a custom made plate for the turbo the only things you will need to get is a fmu, 2 check valves, the cx manifold, some flex hose, fuel and oil lines with hardware to go with it And a few other things it seems like a lot but it not that much about 200.00 or 250.00 worth of parts for about 160 to 170 whp at 6 psi look it up youll find it.

I was given the manifold for a b16 with the turbo and i spent about 50.00 so for and for a d16 it MOVES......

Hey, someone besides my girlfriend uses the term V4!!! But seriously, when you get more knowledgable, you'll realize how stupid of a comment that is. (Even if it was an oversight. Mistakes like that shouldnt happen)

Back to ur Qs, convert to manual, turbo it and smoke that whale of a taurus...ihe wont cut it.

Wrong. Del Sol S and Si were availible in 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Only the Del Sol VTEC was manual only.

I admit, it's quite annoying that the Si (which everyone associates with the 99-00 Civic Si) is the SOHC and the b16 is called the VTEC, when the Si *also* has a VTEC motor. And there never was an Si-VTEC - that's an Integra, IIRC.

Autozone's part computer confuses the matter further; it lists the VTEC as the "Del Sol", no suffix or anything.
