Default CRX hf octane requirement ?

I just bought my first Honda, a 1987 CRX hf with 5 speed. I think 91 octane is specified, but is it O.K. to use the cheaper 87 octane ? Also, there is an orange arrow on the lower central part of the instrument panel that becomes lit intermittently. Can anybody tell me what that arrow means ? Thanks ! By the way, I got 52 mpg on my first trip. Amazing.

The arow i belive is an idiot shift light. It will probably go off alot, and for not much appearent reason. Half my cars when set on cruise on the highway 65-70mph would go off once and a while. Not sure about the fuel thing. If it spark knocks or pings on reg, you'll have to run super. If not and your milage dosent drop horrificly, then you'll prob be fine. But depending on the computer, it might retard the timing due to the octane being low, but im not 100% sure, someone else should know tho.

the hf runs 9.6:1 compression so 87 should work but like the other person noted if it pings or knocks just go to 91
