Motor help!
Itd have to be between an LS or B20. A D15 is just out of the question. May i ask why you dont want to go VTEC on either? Vtec is what all-motor is about in honda, in my honest opinion.

LS motors (B18b)
Pros
Good torque for a 1.8L (127 ft/lbs)
Inexpensive (even cheaper than a B16)
142 hp (more than any stock D series)
Boost heads love them
Cons
No VTEC
Longest B series transmission
B20
Pros
Great torque (133 ft/lbs)
good boost motors
inexpensive
B20z=146hp
Cons
Thin cylinder walls
Have to peice together a swap for a Civic (can't drop it in with a B20 tranny)
Won't pass BAR (light truck motor in a car)
Low hp in the B20b(126 hp)

Not a whole lot, it would be more worth your while to invest money into an LS or even B20. LS would probably be easier, they are more commonly seen than B20's are. B20's are known for having thin cylindar walls too.

Well with the LS, you should be concerned about the transmission first, it has the longest B-series tranny, like the D15b8 tranny for D-series. First thing i would worry about is investing in a shorter B-series tranny, such as a gsr, b16, or even ITR if you have the money. Bolt-on's shouldnt be on your list of worrys yet, if you get an LS.

I had an LS motor with an intake and exhaust in my 93 coupe, with a GS-R Transmission on it. I was able to run a 14.9 1/4 mile run with a full interrior on 17" Gram Lights with nitto 555's, it was 90 degrees out that day. In my opinion, if youre looking to save some cash, go with an LS motor with a GS-R or B16 Tranny. Always good to start there, then later down the road if you ever want to add v-tec, you can go LS-Vtec. B20's are pretty cool too.

No, it's a JDM version of the D16Z6 for all intents and purposes and is not worth the 900 or whatever hmotors wants for it.
It puts out about the same power as a Z6/Y8 motor.

If you actually search through some stuff, the more you search, the more you'll realize that VTEC isn't exactly "tons of horsepower."
For the price of an LS/VTEC you can build a regular LS to beat an LS/VTEC.
You shouldn't decide on a motor based on whether or not it has VTEC, that's rice talking.

Yeah but what people forget to mention is that the B16 is just ridiculously short trans. The LS transmission's gear ratios are about the same as an Z6 gear ratios (which are the shortest gear ratios on a D series motor). There's nothing at all wrong with the stock LS trans, it's just that the B16 and ITR are ridiculously short, but obviously better for acceleration.
In terms of transmission ratios: LS = Z6 (approx) (shortest D)

Maybe 5-20 more.
EDIT:
You'll make the most power with the most displacement if you're going all motor, the B20, obviously. Though I'd do a build on an LS before I did a build on a B20 unless you plan on building the bottom end of that B20 because they really like to go "boom" under too much power.
If you want all motor power, go with an F20B or an H22, they'll put close to the ITR w/ bolt-ons and obviously if you upgrade them they kick ***.
As much as the people here on H-T don't wanna admit it:
There's no replacement for displacement.
A higher displacement motor gets higher gains from upgrades, simple as that. (in terms of all motor, boost would also work too, but you're looking all motor).
My friend's roomate had/has a firehawk transam - bolted on headers and gained close to 40whp on the dyno (actual dyno, not *** dyno) - that **** don't happen on a 4 banger.
