Default the crank

a while a go i read about the crank, that over time if sits around too long in one pisition, it will sag. (loose it's balance) well happens i just bought a gsr short block and the only thing holding the crank to the block is the two outer main caps. the guy said it has been sitting for about a year. i was gonna take the crank out and repaint the block aluminum color. my buddy said i should keep the crank at a vertical pisition if stored. any suggestion?

IIRC, that is true.

The crank is forged. I highly doubt gravity will have any effect on it.

does the crank pulley have to come off before i can proceed to take the crank off the block? took it to my friend today and he broke two impact sockets trying to take the damn thing out. how else can i take it out besides a big *** breaker bar? i'll try heating it when he replaces the two sockets..
