Default B.A.R Question

im sorry im probly lazy tonight to search, look at the time its light, mind as well post one.

my question is can i B.A.R my B20b? lots of people said that no you cant. i just wanna clarify that, thats all. please, im begging dont post "been covered before/use search button"

i got this off another thread like 2003 thread

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by . &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">JDM MOTORS CAN BE LEGAL AS LONG AS:

1. The engine is the same year as car or newer.

2. The ECU is a USDM and not JDM.

3. NO JDM wiring harness, it must be USDM. (I am a little confused about this, I am wondering if my USDM CX harness will pass?)

4. The intake must be the original USDM air box, OR an intake that has a C.A.R.B sticker that is STRICTLY for the swapped motor. (Example: an AEM CAI for a GSR with a GSR motor will PASS, a AEM CAI for a Type R with a GSR motor will NOT pass)

5. The exhaust manifold MUST BE USDM, and if it is not O.E. then it must have a C.A.R.B sticker that matches the motor. I asked the ref. if they could really tell the difference between a stock USDM and JDM exhaust manifold, and he said that they have pictures for everything, and there are slight differences.

6. No adjustable FPR's, not unless it has a C.A.R.B. sticker. Does anyone know if the AEM FPR is C.A.R.B legal?

7. Must have a catalytic converter hooked up (this one is pretty obvious).

8. All USDM O.E. smog equipment MUST be hooked up and working properly!

*YOU ONLY GET TO VISIT THE SMOG REF. TWO TIMES TO TRY AND HAVE THE SWAPPED MOTOR PASS; AFTER THE SECOND TIME, IF IT DOESN'T PASS, I GUESS YOU ARE **** OUT OF LUCK*</TD></TR></TABLE>

and in that same thread one guy post that he bar'd a b20 in his car..

my car is a 1991 civic sedan 4DR
-jdm 96 B20b w/ paperwork from Attarco
-OBD-0
-stock LS manifold
-stock LS headers w/ o2 sensor
-aem inake with carb sticker
-car idles fine
-custom 2.5 exhaust w/ stock cat resonator and muffler (stock wise, 2.5 for my b20 to flow)
-check engine light works properly
-92-93 integra LS ecu
-usdm wire harness im sure cause bought the engine with the car (from a friend)
-everything else is STOCK

my motor

my exhaust

even if my car cant BAR, how much does it cos anyways??

no u cannot bar a B20 for the shear fact that ref's classify the B20 as a truck/suv motor. and thats the main reason y u cant ref it.

as for only goin 2 times thats bull. i had to go about 4-5 times because my LS at the time was runnin high on NOX. but the ref i went to told me that u can go as many times as u need too. as long as u pay each time.

i kno how u feel. i was hella happy as soon as i reff'ed my crx. i was like F*** u PIGS. lol. but u might have to pull the motor and swap in an LS then reff. n after u ref swap it back. cuz the B20 and LS look identical right?

naw cant do that becasue on the tag that you are issued from the ref says:
"94 acura
1.8 non vtec"

So it would be hard to pull that off becasue of the different motor stamps

not true, back in the days you could get a b20 to pass bar. not any more because it's classified as a truck motor. but the old preludes 88-91 i think had the engine code of b20

My_EFsedan;

<U>When in doubt, ask the Referee!!!</U> I've never had a problem with just going by and waiting until they have some time, and then asking a question. Treat them with respect for their time, and they will do the same.

As far as I'm conserned, you can't BAR a B20 due to it's being a "truck" engine.

Unless the process has changed, you get to see the Referee twice for the initial payment. If you still don't pass, you have to pay again. But you can go as many times as it takes.

Which is exactly why I moved to Florida. But that was short lived because then I moved to PA and we have emissions and inspection. The only way a motor swap will pass is if it's emissions output is within the ranges of the stock motor. But then again if you take it to a dealership and have a receipt showing that you paid more than $150 in mechanical work to get it to pass they'll issue you a waiver and your good for a year.

8. All USDM O.E. smog equipment MUST be hooked up and working properly!

the smog equipment must also meet requirements of the year the motor is. with a 96 block you have to meet the obd2 standard if i remember correctly

I visited the ref 5 times to get my B18a legal in my CRX. They don't just look at your wiring, they check your vacuum line routing as well. They are extrememly thorough these days and smarter than you think.

Like Wes said, they have always been great about answering questions and printing diagrams.

they check everything. I was lucky enough to pass on my 1st try. Just make sure to go over everything and make it perfect before you think of going.

another question just popped up, scince they do look at all the wiring ect, does that mean that i need to have the entire obd1 harness on my car? or could i just have a jumper, the car currently is running a crx ecu that is chipped, we tried putting in a b16 ecu, and the car just shut off..... (still lots of bugs to figure out...car was just bought the other day... runs like a champ on the chipped ecu that it came with... besides the fact of high idle....)

This is true you can't bar this motor one is the ref will call it a suv/truck motor BUT i have heard that you can exempt your car and make it pass Thats what the ref told me best thing to do is call and make an appointment and they will tell you all the 411 you need to KNOW...
