Shorted head unit
Can someone please tell me if a shorted head unit can be repaired (by a repairman)? I'm pretty sure the short was a +12V to head unit chassis. The deck is last year's Pioneer 7800. The new decks are crap and this one is discontinued so I want to keep this one, but it does not power on (hard wired it like 12 billion times).
Comparing 7800 to 7900...
The 7900 has only a 7-band EQ, unlike the 7800 which has 16. This was probably the biggest factor why I chose 7800 in first place.
Screen resolution is only 160x48. 7800's resolution is 256x64. I don't know if you've seen it, but it really makes a big difference. The image is very clear on 7800. Even my older 8600 from a few years back had a 192x48 resolution, and it was in color. The new unit is "blue & white". This is kind of nonsense - going back in time in digital age.
I also don't need bluetooth...just something that I feel is a waste if I don't use it.

there was a shift in model numbers this year. your unit was converted to the 9800bt unit this year. your comparing apples to oranges. but i do see you point in the features. i would miss those too.
Hi all,
I've got a potentially related question to the one on this thread. My '96 Accord's stock head unit has shorted out (I know, I know; who cares, right? I was going to get a pioneer p-6900ub, but fell on hard financial times), and I'm wondering if anyone knows about the wiring involved in diagnosing the problem. It's not a fuse; the unit has been sporadically shutting down on me, and now it's just done. I heard somewhere it might have something to do with the ignition, but I really have no clue. Any help would be appreciated.

I may be wrong, but I think 9800bt is last year's model, which they haven't updated. It ends in 800 and not in 900 (as this year's units do), has the same design as 7800 and as far as I remember I've seen it last year on Pioneer site side-by-side with 7800. Maybe they will have a 8900 come out, I don't know.

You only need a 12v positive and a ground to check. Connect the positive to ignition pin on the unit, and a ground to the ground pin. Just make sure not to touch other pins you're not supposed to. And if you're not running the wires directly from the battery, then check that there is something actually going through the wire. Your unit will either power on or stay dead just like mine does
