timing belt
What do you all recommend for replacing the timing belt on a prelude?
I called a rapair shop here in Raleigh NC and they told me the cost would be around $650, my car has 100,000 miles on it now and runs great. How long can I wait, is it worth it, can I see if the belt is fine?
I guess I don't want to spend $650 unless I really have to.
Thanks!

I would suggest having the work done sometime soon. Changing the timing belt and water pump before they fail is the responsible thing to do. With that amount of miles I am assuming it is a 5th gen h22? $650 seems like a lot.....if you are pretty good with a wrench you might consider buying a service manual and doing the work yourself.....you will save hundreds in labor
As said before, if you are handy with a wrench do it yourself, but if your not $650 sounds fair, since you have to remove engine mounts. I have done a few without pulling the engine, but I really think it easier to pull the engine in order to get my big hands in there. Lets just say Its a little harder then changing your oil.
Sounds good, I have seen the project done and I could handle the job the only thing is I live in a apartment complex now and I cannot even change my oil (not allowed). So $650 sounds high?
thanks

Yeah, that's a little high, but there is a lot of work involved. It is a job that needs to be done the RIGHT way, that's for sure. I'd shop around and see if you can get any better prices, but the most important thing is getting a compotent shop to do it.

Thanks guys, fast responce, I guess I am going to have to pull out the wallet, I guess its worth the $$$. If it was my girls civic id just let the engine blow and replace the D16.

it's about $200 in parts for the belt and pump. thats if they use oem parts which is highly recommended that you use. make sure they are using them and not the cheapest junk out there so they can make more money off of you.
better yet, if you take it somewhere, buy the belt and pump ahead of time from http://www.hondrparts.com or http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and just pay for labor.
or if you can find a place to do it yourself, its not a very difficult job. you can d/l the manual for free and buy and crank holding tool for $30. there are step by step procedures in the book and they are easy to follow. just be careful not to bump the cams out of time and it will be easy to slip the old one off and put the new one on.

i bet if you shopped around, you would find 650 to about average. the parts alone are going to run you 300+ and i think the book shows like 3.8 hrs to complete the job.
you need both belts. both tensioner pulleys. new water pump. you dont need to replace the valve cover gasket. ive pulled mine off 3 times and it still does not leak.

You don't need to, but I figured for 15 bucks for the whole set, why not... Especially if your car is older, which naturally all preludes will be.
I got all my stuff from Mike @ http://www.importrp.com I would recommend them above anyone else. Prices, service, speed of shipment, packaging, the whole damn thing...

sorry, one thing i forgot was the tensioner. if you still have the auto-tensioner on it, i would recommend converting to a manual tensioner (there is a writeup on here somewhere), but it will cost you about another $200. they are more reliable now that there have been a few sporadic cases of auto tensioners breaking prematurely.
so the things you should absolutely replace are the timing belts, water pump and tensioner. if you get everything factory oem from http://www.hondrpats.com it will cost about $250.
if you do it yourself, check for leaks and go from there. its not necessary to replace everything at 100k. those seals are designed to last the life of the engine if maintained properly. i have an old civic that has over 200k with all original seals and no leaks whatsoever. your going to have to pay a shop extra to do that anyway.

$200?!?!? You're crazy.

it probably not genuine oem honda. it says "genuine oem" not "genuine oem honda" its probably some chinese junk brand. with so much at stake, i'd rather not risk it or recommend that anyone else does. i'm a firm believer of "you get what you pay for".
Thanks Guyz!!! I am going to go and spend the $450-$600 its worth it to me, my car is in good shape so I am not going to chance cheap parts.
I favorites some of those sites, thanks guys!

Its to bad you dont live near my area, i would do the work for you for half that price. Ive done enought timing belt changes/conversions on H22s i can do it with my eyes closed. Good luck.
Yeah too bad, I just moved to NC from VT and the labor went from $45hr to $70. Instead of saving to mod my car I am near the 100,000 mark on my car. Timing belt $600, O2 sensor bad $200. I had an Integra and I thought those were $$ this prelude kills me but I love it.
Well I just called Tao auto in raleigh and they said between $675-$700 but they replace the Timing belt, water pump, engine seals, and external belts. Is this normal for the average job?
Thanks

you think its easier to pull the engine to change the belt than to do it in car?
jesus...
I can do the belts with all the seals and water pump in less than 5 hours. it probably takes 5 hours just to get the engine out of the car.
you only have to undo one motor mount. its not that big of a deal

I promise you didnt do the rear crank seal with a timing belt job...
$650-$750 is about what you'd pay at the dealership...
you'd best replace your spark plugs at this mileage too...if you havent already.

I replaced the spark plugs, distributor, rotor, plug wires are next and then timing belt. I heard from a buddy back at home that its almost easier taking the engine out too.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Yea, I did. But I pulled the engine and then pulled the tranny. Had a new clutch to do anyways. SO I just went all out.
As for cheap chinese parts. Hah. From importrp.com everything I got OTHER then the head gasket kit, the water pump, and a couple seals were genuine oem "honda" parts. Sealed in honda bags and all. When I looked at my old water pump to the new one, the new one was beefier and spun better (obviously). Please don't talk about things you don't know, whomever said it up there ^
