Default From S to an R

Hey, I'm new and I've got a few questions that hopefully will result in me driing an R soon.

Ok, so here I am, 6 months into my S2000 ownership, and I am feeling the need to "downgrade" (if you could call it downgrading...) to a type-r. Tired of having a convertible with only two seats... Yes, I know most people don't do this, but I have always loved Rs more than any other tuner. Besides, I can't really do much "tuning" with the S without dropping a huge chunk of $ in it.

Now I found one a few hundred miles from me. A 2001 w/ 60k on it for $17,000. JDM front. Looks beautiful. Of course, it has to be moded (I hate buying moded cars). The mods include exhuast, intake, flywheel, clutch, short shifter, coil overs, custom front/rear lip. Now, none of those mods can hurt a car really, though they do show sign that the car likely was raced, or at least driven hard a few times (as if anyone owning an R doesn't drive it a bit hard here and there). The owner is a mechanic, so that's a plus. Also, the AC and power steering has been removed. Now I can survive without AC for the rest of the summer, and I think I can handle no PS, but I wanted the opinion or real R owners out there... Is this car a good deal? I'm thinking I'll offer $16,000, but I just want to get some people's opinions.

Thanks!

Btw- anyone interested in a 2004 GPW S2000 w/40k on it?

WHICH components does the car have? That makes a big difference between an SMS-P header, or a Megan header, a Mugen intake, or an eBay special, a kink bent rinky dink exhaust, or a T1R. Find out EXACTLY which components are used.

$16,000 would be a great deal on such a caR. I'd do it.

And Type-Rs are designed to be raced, the car can take a beating man. I've owned mine for a year, purchased with 78,000 miles, and it now has 102,000 miles, and EVERY SINGLE DAY I drive it, and I beat on it, turn to redline every spirited shift, WOT shift, turn over 4th gear, just completely kill it... And every time, it comes back asking for more, perfect compression, perfect leak down, no oil consumption... Perfect car. The only problem I had with the car, was from a misshift (Cracked final drive from wheel hop), and other than that, I've had ZERO problems.

The car was made to be driven, so drive it. And don't be scared because it was driven before you got it, as long as it's in good condition, and YOU maintain it, you will not have a problem.

All quality parts. This guy knows his stuff from the sounds of it. Also, the car has LoJack equiped, though I imagine I have to go through the process of getting all of the LoJack registration stuff transfered into my name. But hey, at least I don't have to buy it new...

Pictures of it? Pictures of both*? Ask him for an exact list of mods so you, and we know what they are.

Not exactly a downgrade either... not just saying this because I own one.

Definitely sounds like a good deal depending on what kind of parts on it as others have mentioned.

^ Agreed.

A downgrade would be a dropping to a stock GSR, from an S2000. Type-R is in the same realm as S2000, performance wise. Just a bit more economical... Of course, other than the threat of theft. S2000, all you have to worry about are the seats getting stolen. Type-Rs... Well... See the main forum index.

The listing doesn't have any info besides a phone number. Here's the photos though. He said that after he put on the JDM front, he molded on the front and rear lips and then layed down a custom pearl coat of paint over something obviously quite close to PY. He gave me the paint code but I don't remember it off hand.

*also, he said the hood is a painted CF hood.

As for that exhaust tip... well... something will have to be done about that. I'm more of a stock-tip kind of guy...

I'd offer 15k depending again on those parts. That front lip doesn't really do it for me, sucks that it's molded on.

You said it sounds like he knows what he's doing, but he don't know where to mount grounds. Good stuff.

IMO I wouldn't buy this, there are a ton of R's for sale right now and this isn't even a factory color.

^ Stock manifold, AEM CAI, and a misgrounded wire.

Honestly, I would pass on it. There are MUCH nicer Rs for sale right now. The paint, the lips... I don't know, something screams "Red Flags" to me for some reason, I don't really have a cut and dried reason for this feeling though.

So if you want it, get it.

He's got a point. Unless you're dead set on yellow with a jdm front.

Yeah, but tragically I live in the SW, where R's are harder to come by than anything else. I run a 500 mile search on autotrader and I pull up five Rs, most of them too high of mileage. And to drive any futher than 500 miles from where I live would be a much more tedious task, one of which I am not able to likely do.

Also, it seems that the ground wire mislocation seems to be a rather common mistake, from what I have seen.

If I want an R, it's going to either be modded, high mileage, or just too expensive (i'm trying to stay under $17,000 but I want a 2000 or 2001).

MUCH better car for the same price.

Plus road trips are fun.

For the record, I bought my Type-R with 78,000 miles, nice bolt ons, in great shape, for $13,500.

One thing that would bother me is that it is shaved; well, partly. the rear does not have any stickers on it, but the side badges are still there.
The holes on the rear hatch have been filled in and painted over, and I think it is just a matter of time before the filling cracks.

My front bumper holes were shaved and one of them cracked before I bought the car. It bothers me, but most people don't notice it.

Something else I saw is:
the heat shield is gone. If he tells you it has a header on it, don't believe him.
It appears that a bracket that bolts onto the tranny is missing as well. It looks like some of the sensor plugs are just hanging there. Also, it looks like the battery fuse for an amp was installed half ***. It is not screwed down to the firewall, so it is just flopping around.

As for the short shifter, I would take that off.

That is just what I saw by looking at it. More pics and info on the car would be great. Keep in mind that a lot of people do the JDM front swap if the car was in a front end accident, so check out the history as best you can.

that paintjob, isnt even the factory phoenix yellow...

seems to me like they got into some sort of accident and painted it over. looks very fishy to me

jdm front, shaved, crappy paint, etc might be something up with it...
look into it before you dump so much money into a car...

also...that engine bay looks like its painted the same crappy yellow paint that the outside is painted with, which makes me believe the car was banged up, stripped, painted, and had the motor put back in...there more to the car that you know...

my father owns his own body shop and i come accross cars like these all day long...something def has to be going on with it...

recovered shell? rebuilt? who knows...make sure u get a vin check

Those shaved parts are eventually going to crack, and I know it looks close to PY, but even before I found out it wasnt, I noticed something wasnt right with the color. That lip is going to get scraped somewhere and your going to have to buy a whole new bumper and get it repainted, once the moldings crack on the lip.

Sorry but this photo sums up this car, IMO.

I don't mean to come off the wrong way, but this car is probably your best bet. I know the history of it.
