First of all, just getting "a chip" won't do you much good. You should look into getting "a tune." Generic chips do more harm than good. Look into Hondata, Chrome, or Neptune.

However, I would only recommend getting that stuff if you have performance applications that require it. If you've got a bone stock Del Sol single cam slammer there, I wouldn't suggest it as much as I would that you get some parts to tune first.

That isn't to say that you can't tune a stock engine, I'm just saying, in order to get the "bang for the buck" you mentioned, you'd probably want some upgrades first.

None.

Those e-bay performance chips are a joke and don't do anything.

if you want a good tune send your P28 ECU out to a place like pherable.net or Kalin (THC07) and they can put a socket in your ECU. Then you need to take it to a dyno and they can tune it accordingly as each engine reacts different.

One of those pre-made baemaps don't work worth of crap, real time tuning is the only way.

If anyone says to you "y0 my boy got a chip for his Civic and it gave him 30hp", you can be sure that they have no idea what they're talking about.

You can get a re-chipped ECU for an OBD1 (or OBD1-converted car). That can change fuel curves for a smidge of power. You could then dyno-tune that ecu with an air-fuel controller (like an APEX AFC/V-AFC) for a few more horsepower.

Unless your car is turbo'ed/SC'ed the gains will be minimal. I think I wrung an extra 10hp (in the fat part of the powerband) out of my 99Si by dyno tuning the camgears/V-AFC. In hindsight, all of that stuff was a big waste of money. A fun waste of money, but a waste nonetheless.

An ecu reflash on a newer K-series motor will net a lot more power, but those engines are in a different league than your d16z6.

It's not even re-chipped.

First a socket has to be soldered in there. Once the socket is soldered in there the chip just pops in, but yeah, it's a different type than that e-bay **** that just richens you up.

A lotta people don't realize it but the K isn't the only thing to reflash the ECU - that's how you tune a lot of newer ECU setups, Honda people seem to think it's something special for the K's, but yeah, it doesn't come into play here.

I always used the terms interchangably. I got a "chipped P28" that was hondata socketed, so I ended up doing exactly what you described. Popped in a Mugen (clone) chip and tuned it from there.
