No!!! Say goodbye to FI for me!
I just got my estimate from the data recovery company for getting my data back off my hard drive (freelance web developer here). They want 1500-3000 to recover it! FAWK!
Sigh... so much for finishing my turbo any time ths year.

Teach you not to back up.
Go to http://www.netmass.com Its an online backup... Like you can choose what to back up, etc. Then have them send you CD's of your entire backup whenever you like. Its monthly service. But it would have saved you a LOT of money. You run RAID? Might want to look into that also, but I don't know how your disk got fried either. Good luck.

lol.. i did have back ups! I have a 10 gig back up hard drive.
To make a long story short:
-old windows files on backup drive wanted to get rid of
-moved all back up files to primary drive
-disabled primary in bios
-formatted backup drive
-re-enabled primary in bios
-no boot...
This is what the recovery company said:
"1500 to 3000 to design and implement custom pattern recognition software to retrieve files in used and unsued clusters of the date drive. " and "Loss of file identifiers in subdirectory definitions"
sigh

sorry man.. i feel for you.
HEre at work people ask about getting soem stuff off their drive.. and it's like tons of money for what they want.. so we dont do it..
add it as a secondary drive in antoher system and see if you can read the data...?
what? it sounds like a ripoff to me. i would try the drive in another computer.
pattern recognition software...wow that some BS RIGHT THERE.
there are a dozen other things to try, like putting it in another computer and booting from that PCs main drive and then accessing your drive.

i called drive savers... after giving them my sob story, they are waving the base fee (so if they arent able to get anything after they try, or are not able to get any of the specific files i ask for, there is nocharge at all) They are also giving me 10% off the economy service which is a 5-7 day turn around instead of the standard which is two day.
So if they are able to get all the specific files i ask for, as well as anything else, it will NOT go over 1800 bux no matter what... it could be as low as 525!

try to do a search on computer forensic tools or something. you might be able to find a demo or something that might help.
so the drive does work! i did not fail? there are several companies that make software to extract data. there will be no folders just raw data files.
Here, call few more data recovery companies. Talk to Drive Savers, Reynolds, and Action Front, tell them Mark from Maxtor referred you and they may hook you up...

Yup, I work at Maxtor. Most of our drives are pretty good and relatively sturdy. I just wanted to try and help this guy out with some possible name dropping
They won't have a clue who I am at those Data recovery centers but they all recently visited us here on site so they generally hook our customers/friends etc. up right after visits

why don't you just reinstall windows on top of everything in the primary.
And next time maybe you should just use nortons ghost before you do anything like that.

it wont even install to it.. i tries to start to, then says i have to reboot computer, and does the same thing over and over again
Boot your computer using a windows 98 boot disk.
Change the primary to be a slave (or auto).
Change the backup to be a primary(or auto).
Set up the bios/mb to accept the new drive config.
Install 98 on the backup drive.
Then use 98 to access the data on the primary drive.
HTH
oh yeah, that will cost you $0.00, unless you want to help me sell my F20C

Edit: had the f*cking order wrong... sheesh

what company was this? I have an old 1gig drive that has some data i'd like to get, but i don't want to spend an excessive amount. The data on the drive is perfectly fine, but the ******* motor is worn out and won't spin up! (old quantum drive with the "sticktion" problem)
