ive seen poeple make topmounts out of the stock upper half of Z6 manifolds and then using the stock flange, welding the proper tubing to it.
Does anyone have any further info?

Check out homemadeturbo.com, specifically:

I've made one too - it fits AC but not PS, has an external WG, and I fit a normal K&N filter and a 3" DP in there too. It cost a total of $50 with 'up-pipe', flanges, 3" mandrel u-bend, and 3" pipe to the cat; <$20 if you don't count the DP stuff. I'm going to be making a few to practice TIG welding more.

The z6, y8, dohc zc all have the 4-2-1 design, dunno about the a6. I think the a6 is a 4-1 because thats what the first Corkey Bell (or whoever) CRX had, it had an up-pipe moving the turbo above/in front of the trans. The rest use the pre-cat design (HF/STD/CX and y7) or a 4-1 deal (dx/lx/etc). Basicly all b16/b18 manifolds are 4-2-1, so you can do this with many manifolds.
So far I have >2000 miles on this mani, and even with DP and manifold in one rigid connection (no flex on recirc dump tube/WG), I have zero cracks. Spool power wouldn't be bad if I didn't have the stock 1 7/8" exhaust, oem CAT, and a 1.25" restriction on the flange bolted to the cast manifold (I was lazy).
I also just got a ching chong manifold for $55 to my door and got some argon, so a blingin' HMT manifold will be made fairly soon.
BTW I don't know how I missed your PM, either I put it aside for a sec and forgot, or wasn't on HT for a week.
