Rough idle, low idle, sputters on acceleration: what to repair?
I have a 1995 Civic EX with 160,000 miles. After receiving it back from the body shop (overdue work, not a recent collision), I noticed it was idling really low. Now, the car basically idles just above 0 RPM, all the time. During acceleration, the scar sputters (as if water were in the gas or something). Also, the exhaust/catalytic converter area doesn't smell quite right. Not sure if that is related.
My guess is that one of the sensors has gone bad. However, I am not a mechanic, so any advice would be appreciated. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? If so, what should I repair?
The only other recent change to the car is that we moved from NY to FL. So, the humidity has increased.
I have had all the regularly scheduled major and minor tuneups. The car went to a Honda shop for a major tuneup w/in the past couple years. I assume they would check and replace the sensors, etc, but I could be wrong.
