just wondering about chassis code

why are 4th gens called bb4,
but on my usdm the vin starts with bb2 and on the jdm vin tags it states bb1?

bb4 is the jdm vtec trim. bb2 is the usdm si and bb1 is the usdm vtec. usdm s is ba8
