what would cause the check engine light to flash at idle and go solid after 3500 rpm? every time i dip below 3500 rpm, the check engine light starts flashing again. and it doesn't give any codes. when i jump the wire, the check engine light just stays solid.

BACKGROUND: i got codes 73 and 74 for misfire. so far since i got codes, i have replaced the fouled plug, #3, swapped plug wires, checked the distributor cap and rotor, and did a valve adjustment.

after the valve adjustment i smelled a lot of gas in the first two minutes. then the engine started idleing smoother for a few minutes and the gas smell went away. then it went back to the same old tricks. running really rough and the check engine light started flashing again.
