Default 4WD Honda Civic????????

Ok everybody, this is just a thinker tinker. I've been doing a little bit of research, and been thinking about screwing around with a 4WD honda civic. I'm not exactly sure how it can be done, but i'm barking up some trees.

First off, I found that the 88-91 civic SW has a 5 speed manual transmission 4WD transmission. I reallize this would be odd as hell, but that car came with a D16a6 which is a standard D series engine as i believe. I'm not to sure if it will bolt up to like a D16z6 for instance.

First question i have: Will a D16z6 transmission bolt up to a D16a6 engine. If so then the 4WD tranny will bolt to the Z6 engine, which now gives me a VTEC builder engine.

With an engine/transmission combination, then all i really need to do is a **** load of cutting and welding.
Essentially i'm going to buy one of these SW 4WD cars for parts. Rip out what i need then scrap metal the rest. I'll have to have axles made for the lengths, and alot of modifications to the car to allow a 4WD axle setup. Essentially alot of welding, and a handful of special parts.

Anyone think it might be even a little fun to do this.
I don't mean fun as in actual fun to do, but done right for the results, a nice outcome?

Can i get some feedback, because i'm thinking this is next years project.

You're not the 1st person to ask this but...

Expect a LOT of custom fab work.

If you like long, drawn-out projects then this one is for you.

It's not 4wd like EVO VIII or WRX STI Imprezna 4wd.

The 4wd system of the SW wagon had like a 80% front, 20% back 4wd system, there's a video on streetifre or youtube of a buy doing a burnout while tied to a tree. As you can see the rear tires are barely spinning.

It's not a 4wd system designed for performance, it's a 4wd system designed for soccer moms who get stuck in a little bit of snow. And obviously, since they haven't used it since 91, it didn't work out too well.

I don't mind if it draws out so much. I have my own company, and this is going to be my company show piece.

I'm even getting a tranny guy who's gonna custom gear the tranny to hold a bit more power. The K series engine will allow me more torque to get the move on.

I had originally thought of something else with the d series and an old 88-91 civic d16a6 Station wagon 4wd tranny. That seemed like it was gonna be too weak.

I'm doing K series because the b series is a little more limited on this. K series is big now, and has the potential for more power, and the K24 block will allow me to maximize on torque. I'm essentially going to maximize torque before HP in this thing.

A HONDA 4x4 WITH A BIT OF TORQUE

Now thats not something you see every day.

Well of course they weren't using it anymore. The tranny was weak by design anyway. Wouldn't hold up to what i want it to do. That was just the process start of the concept. Granted others have thought of or done, but not alot of them. This in particular was just my train of thought.

Somehow I just don't see the performance working out too well...but hey, best of luck to ya.

Btw, there are already 5th and 6th gen AWD Civics. They're sold in Japan, primarily under the trim name RTi. They came with D-series engines and were sedans.

also the front has too spin for the back to get power and it would shift the weight in your car and it would be a large amount of custom fabrication that you probly can't do...Im not saying you can't but it is not feasiible

also the K spins clockwise as the D spins counter clockwise...GL

click my sig for a ef hatch conversion, the rt4wd puts up with 12psi and 5000rpm launchs. I wouldn't call it weak (not that its bomb proff though) and its not a 80/20 split. I suggest you boys do some research instead of "I heard this"

Look up some old magzines too from Honda Tuning or Sport Compact Car. Somebody was working on a 94-01 Integra with the AWD from a CRV. Might be some info there for you. I try to remember and look tonight and see if I still have it too.

I was going to do this with my del sol but bought an evo instead... b series with crv awd system is going to be the best setup K wont bolt up to the awd unless you use a newer awd drive which will in title alot more fab work and im not sure you have really thought that out. you have to figure out how the you are getting the drive shaft to the wheel...fab to the sky. you can even do a h22 with a b20 tranny... when you run awd drive it becomes a tq game not hp. b20 boosted h22 boosted or something inbetween...

I'm really starting to wonder if some of you are actually reading the whole topic. I know there is going to be some fab work done. Prepared for that. This ain't my first rodeo son...

I know its an issue of torque, i'm familiar with the torque game, hence the K series. Because it is bigger and badder than the B series. The K series, primarily the K24 is going to give me more displacement and allow me to maximize torque. The axles will be custom, which will run about a grand for what i'm needing. Already got a check on this. The primary t hing will be the weld on the body donw the center of the engine to house the transfer axle. When this gets welded in, we are going to stiffen up the chassis at this point as well. We plan to do a light reinforcement on the underbody as well. We're prolly going expensive on the front to rear transfer axles. We're looking light to minimialize loss. This project is doable, and i do know the complexity of the project, and do not take it lightly.

So many people to jump on and say its tooo much work.
Well thats not your call. I'm not solo on this. I've got a team for this, because i've been working with a few people that want there name on this project. I'm talking about 2 tranny specialists, a master welder. A machine shop, and a cople master fabricators. I'm by trade an engineer turned mechanic.

Everything i do is overthought, and down to precision before it ever begins..

So please, nay sayers

I'm not the first to do this type of a thing, and its possible, and i've got the dedication, means and motivation.

You guys can keep the negative vibe, because as most people on here, are talking about, this is something possitive, and will be nice when its done.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out, and keep the inquiries coming. I quite enjoy hearing about concerns, ideas, recommendations. This is the preliminary concept, that has not been finalized on anything yet.

We are looking for our EK transplant Shell though. We can start stripping for the oncoming build.

Keep it coming fellas.

I have CRV parts if you are feeling bold. Looking back at the CRV rear sub frame it looks like it could be adapted to something as far as mounting points

since your aready trying the hardest swap you can think of why dont you use a k23 out of the acura rdx 240hp and 260tq and a stock turbo to boot

Already looked at a price for that. I found an engine for 5k. Honestly, i'd rather build this engine. I've not yet got the specifications that i'm going to build it to. Its right now in the very preliminary stages.

I've got to brainstorm over a few beers forehand.
Sound familiar???

The RDX would be interesting, but i've realliy vested the idea of this, and parts availability is really going to have to be one of them. Can't find the RDX stuff necessary, or want to pay that much. This k series setup that i'm going to be going for will allow me the build that i want, with a fair amount of performance parts i need with minimal custom parts. Most of everythign won't be taken care of until i can find me a EK body, and start ripping to start measuring, and drafting.

So much BS on there.

Your right, cause it was all BS, none of its a legitimate concept.

How about you read a post before you throw your half a cent in.

Didnt mean BS as is not a good idea or it hasnt been done. I meant it as by bad im at work and didnt feel like reading everything is i just went through it quick and missed some stuff the first time. bs = alot of reading. not bs= none of its a legitimate concept.. they are good concepts just costly and there maybe better ways to go about it. I spent about a year looking in to makeing my del sol awd and even wanted to use a k series but its was cheaper and easyer to get a used evo so i did.
