Default Tranny Rebuild or New (Junkyard Special) ?

So, I'm noticing transmission fluid leaking out between the main seam where the two pieces of the unit bolt together and am now faced with this question...

Should I have mine rebuilt or should I just get a new one from a yard somewhere?

Anyone have any past experience with this, either way? What are the price differences between the two?

You have two choices:

1.) you buy a JY trans and take a gamble that it doesn't have bad or ground up synchros. Pros, it gets your car running faster than a rebuild down time, and you have chance to get a better geard unit, like from the prelude.

2.) you get your leak fixed and know that the synchros are good. Down side is the car is down for a bit. You could change the final drive while your in there, even throw in a posi diff.

Either way, you are going to be out cash. What I would do. Let the car cool off. Throughly clean the place leaking and get it grease/oil free. Buy some bad *** silicon sealant and push it into the leaking area and coat the area well. Let it throughly dry. Then, buy a prelude trans. Have it rebuilt, put a posi unit in it (if it doesn't already have one), then put that in the car to fix your problem.

Ok, well I just off the phone with a Transmission place that quoted me $900 for a rebuild. This was after him thinking that it was an auto which it's not, I informed him. He said well, then they would definatley have to tear it down to see how much it would cost because the manual tranny parts are more expensive. Wierd.

Since I'm doing a full engine rebuild, and have a second car, the down time means nothing to me. So doing it right is my only option here. If going with a Prelude tranny is the right way to go, then that's what I'll have to do. I had no idea that they would mate up like that. Are there modifications that need to be done in order for that swap to work, or do they go in bolt for bolt?

Seems like I heard on a forum a while back that people were actually wanting to swap their prelude trannys with accord trannys because ours have taller gears? Or was I high when I read that?

Do Prelude trannys come stock with lsd's? I ask because of what you said "Then, buy a prelude trans. Have it rebuilt, put a posi unit in it (if it doesn't already have one)"

I would try the rebuild myself, but I have horrible flashbacks of when I was a kid and would try to tear apart my R/C car tranny's only to find as soon as you crack it open, springs and gears and all kinds of **** flys out of it, only to never get it back together again. I hear that there are no springs like that in a manual car tranny tho. ?

Hmm.

the M2B4 tranni is a prelude tranny with Lsd.....accord trannys have longer gear ratios than preludes but the H23 tranny is right in the middle of both...

I thought only the japanese prelude trannies came with lsd's. Is there any aftermarket lsd's you can get for the accord tranny?

nothing is going to come flying out of a car's manual transmission. However, if the trans case is just leaking, why not open the 2 halfs up and reseal it? its not hard. I will be doing a DIY on rebuilding a H23 trans with LSD upgrade in a couple months. It will be going in my cb7.
