Rattling noise when running A/C
I have an 07 CRV and other day my wife pointed that that when the a/c is running you can a rattling and slight high pitch noise. Its not bad when you first start up the car but after it has been driven for a little bit the noise gets worse. What I dont understand is that you really only hear the noise when the car is idling in drive or reverse. When the car is in park it doesnt make the noise. I know it has to be the a/c because when I turn if off there is no noise. Has anyone had this issure or know what might cause it?
Thanks for the reply. The sound seems to stay the same no matter what the fan speed. What seems strange is that it will not make the noise when you first start the car in the AM or after it has been sitting for a little while. You actually have to drive the car for a few minutes with a/c on before you hear the noise. As far as I can tell it doesnt make the noise while the car is moving its only when its idling in drive or reverse. There is also no noise while the car is in park. I am taking it to the honda dealership tomorrow. Hopefully they can reproduce the noise.
Strangely, I have the same problem. I picked up my 07 CRV on the 8th of August. When the a/c is on no matter the fan speed there is a intermittent high pitched sound. At first I thought it was the stereo because it sounds like feedback, but the sound occurs even when I have the radio off.
Was your dealership able to reproduce? What was the verdict?

I took it by the dealership again yesterday and at first the couldnt reproduce the noise, but when I picked it up today the tech finally heard it. It wasnt the high pitch noise they were concerned about its a rattling noise coming from underneath the car when the a/c is running. The tech thinks its the expansion valve. He said there has been a problem with faulty expansion valves on some of the new CRV's.
I have been to a CRV Forum recently that is full of horror stories about CRV A/C system total failures that seem to start out with grinding noises, etc. and end up with total system replacements. Google Honda CRV Forums. Its not good news.

yup...I've personally replaced probably close to a dozen 02 up CRV A/C compressors...very expensive bill...they just blow up...literally. Sometimes the lucky ones just lock up and burn up the A/C clutch before it explodes...it's still not good...
Good luck,

Like what he said, 02-06 CRV's do often have AC compressor problems. As for the 07 CRV's, well Honda is aware of a high pitch noise coming from the right front corner of the car. One of their Tech Line employees has a CRV that is making the same high pitch noise. The believe that it is coming from the evaporator and/or expansion valve. They have yet to determine the proper solution at this time. You won't find this on Honda's IN site, you'll have to have a technician call Honda's Tech Line to find this.
The problems of the pre 02 Crv have been solved as far as I could see and was told. From what I heard there was a incorrect shim in the Compressor causing the failure. According to a Honda engineer I spoke with,he said the problem was resolved. Everytime a pre 02 has come in w/ a problem Honda has not had a problem goodwilling and entire system to resolve the matter. As far as the 07 I havent seen any reoccuring problems as of yet. This shouldnt be to hard to diagnose if the noise is present. A possible tensioner pulley perhaps? A faulty expansion valve is easy to diagnose due to incorrect pressures but havent really seen them cause noises. Good luck and let us know what they find.
