Latley I have been noticing a slight vibration when I am at idle RPMs, espically at drive thru's and at Red Lights.. I can really feel the vibration in the steering wheel, it feels my car "shivers" which is really odd. I figure its one of my motor mounts, but I am not sure, how do I go about checking them? Are they easy to locate once my car is jacked up or what?

Could anything else be causing it? I notice it more often when my AC Is on, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

 

try checking your front motor mount first, it's probably the most common mount to break. To check it, just visually look at the rubber of the mount and see if it's broken.

I have this similar problem. My steering wheel vibrates when car is stopped idling in drive or reverse. Does not do it in neutral or park or when driving down the road.

I remove the front hydraulic mount and it was split in 2 pieces. I put in a new one and it seems the vibration got a little worse.

Any ideas???????????????????

 

Deffinately a motor mount. See if you can locate the mounts and check them, should be 3 all together. Sometimes they just go get old and go bad. Sometimes just bottoming out or hitting a curb could do it. I have personal experience with that

 

At freeway speeds, when you let off the gas or get back on it, if you feel a jerk, the mounts are bad. How many miles do you have on the car?

 

186k miles.

I just bought it and am fixing it up. I replaced the torque strut bushings and front hydraulic mount. I know there is a weird little rectangle shaped bushing thing under the transmission and I need to replace the mount at the front of the motor.

It does jerk at freeway speed when letting off or pushing hard.

I will try and replacing the other 2 pieces of rubber.

 

I have a similar problem, my car does vibrate and idle, and I'm not sure if this is the same problem but it does alot once I get up to about 80. And I know my frount motor mount is shot, but would changing it help these problems?

whats that "test" u do to check if the mounts are bad?

 

Visual inspection, seeing if it jerks at freeway speeds (as I mentioned)

There is no "car-humping motor-mount test" that I know of.

The front motor mount(the one in the front of the car, not the front of the motor) is hadraulic(liquid filled and is supposed to suppress vibration. If you know it's shot replace it. This is where I started and it looks like it was only the beginning. I did notice less of a jerk putting it into drive from neutral.

 

You can put it in park (auto) or in gear (manual) and rock the car back and forth to see how much the engine twists. Or you can start the motor, put it in gear, and while holding the brake, give it gas. That will twist the motor the same as rocking (humping) it. Using the ebrake works well for this especially with automatics. Set the ebrake, put it in gear, and stand next to the engine bay (in case something goes wrong so you don't get run over), give it gas, and watch the engine/mounts for excessive movement.
