Cam Seal Removal... Searched, didnt quite find what i was looking for.
can someone either walk me through the process or give me a write-up of how to do this?
thanks in advance.
thanks in advance.
I'm getting ready to do the same thing....I'm pretty sure you have to remove the valve cover along with that black thing sitting right next to the seal (not sure what it is called) - how far are you anywho?

if its a B series, you need to remove the valve cover and the cam cap on the seal side.
you can pick up the seal with no effort.

sorry guys, its a y5 bottom end y8 vtec head. i have the valve cover off, and the cam gear off, thats as far as i went.
First, rotate the motor, counter-clockwise, by hand so that #1 piston(driver side is #1, passenger side is #4) is at the top of it's stroke. To do this, allign the mark on the damper to the mark on the timing cover. It should be the single mark on the damper. There are 3 marks pretty close to one another, but disregard them for this process. Use the single mark.
You'll need to remove the camshaft timing sprocket. Crack loose the 12mm bolt on holding the sprocket on, and leave it there.
Next you need to remove tension from the timing belt itself. To do this, look at the front of the motor. You'll see a small circular cap down nearer to the crankshaft, in the timing belt cover that needs to be removed. Remove this, grab a 14mm socket and cheater bar, and stick it in there. This is the tensioner bolt. All you need to do is crack it loose. You now have the slack you need to remove the belt from the timing sprocket. You then remove the 12mm bolt from the sprocket, and remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
With the valve-cover off, you're staring at a few 10mm and a few more 12mm bolts. Remove the 4 10mm bolts. Starting from the outside, working inward loosen the 12mm bolts a full turn at a time. Do this 2-3 times, always outward to inward. Then loosen all the bolts completely. DO NOT REMOVE THEM! They are there to help the rocker assembly stay intact, and not fall apart.
Now, remove the rocker assembly, as a whole, and place on/in a cardboard box. This prevents messes. Here's the messy part. When you remove the seal, oil will come out, leaking down the front of the motor. You'll want a rag there to prevent a larger mess. Pick up the camshaft(the seal will come with it) and quickly place the rag where it's leaking.
Turn the camshaft front side-up, remove the seal, and replace with a lubricated new one. Place the cam back in, while removing the rag quickly, and position the seal where it was before; about flush with the front of the head.
Install the rocker assembly using the reverse order from loosening. You tighten from inner to outer. Watch the vtec rockers to make sure they are pisitioned correctly, as camshafts have been broken by being careless. Tighten the 12mm bolts to about 18ft and the 10mm bolts to about 10ft. Doublecheck the front seal is positioned correctly, parallel to the side of the head.
Install the camshaft sprocket, turn to tdc, line up the crankshaft marks again, if it moved, and slide on the belt. Crank the motor counter-clockwise 1/4 turn, and tighten the 14mm timing belt tensioner bolt.
You should be able to figure the rest out. If not, ask, and I'll clarify.
Have fun!
