Gas mileage for 5-speed manual trans.
I had researched the Fit thoroughly (reading everything I could get my hands on) before I bought it, so naturally, I had come across some reviewers who claimed they were getting less than optimal gas mileage.
I bought a 5-speed manual Sport model on June 9th, and I could not be more pleased with my mileage. As of the last fillup, I am averaging 35.69 MPG overall, with the majority of that driving occuring on city streets, and crowded L.A. freeways. Some of it is with the A/C on at freeway speeds, but most of it is with the windows open at lower speeds. But whatever the speed, I always drive for economy, which means watching the traffic ahead and adjusting my speed accordingly to minimize stop and go, whenever practical.
Be that as it may, and since there is already a topic for "BAD GAS MILEAGE," I am curious as to what mileage other 5-speed stick-shift Fit owners are getting, good or bad, as well as any other observations you may have on the subject. Thank you.

only checked one time, but hard city driving, and highway speeds of up to 80 mph, and with a/c on sometimes i got 32.7 mpg....i guess i can't complain
...i love my fit

Got 43 mpg driving the car back from the dealership in Jersey at a relaxed pace (65-70mph) and then driving around Ithaca (hilly city/suburban setting) for the remaining half-tank. I'm very pleased as well.
I average:
~29mpg for city driving; and
~33 mpg for highway driving.
I don't drive the car particularly hard, but cruise at 75-80 mph on the freeway and my shiftpoints are generally between 4-5k. Getting great fuel economy isn't a high priority as no matter how I drive this car, I'm sure to get (comparatively) great gas mileage. Rather, I want to enjoy my driving experience.

I used to hear the same things about Scions, 3/4 of the people complained about bad gas mileage... It's all about how you drive. You're not going to zip around and get great gas mileage. Drive sensibly and you'll get decent returns, it's pretty simple.
What I've found is that the city mileage is generally right around (and sometimes lower) than the 31 mpg estimate. However, the expressway mileage is freaking awesome- sometimes over 40 mpg. Although I get disappointed if I get less than 30 mpg, my boyfriend always points out that it is better than what my Eclipse used to get. All-in-all, I absolutely LOVE my new Fit and cannot complain when there are Trucks and SUVs on the road getting half the city mileage of the Fit when they drive on the highway. I'm glad my boyfriend convinced me out of getting a truck or an SUV.
Drove to the Adirondacks with my dad this week, and got the following numbers:
1st tank (mostly city, we just started out): 36mpg
2nd tank (VERY hilly driving followed by 75mph hwy speeds): 40mpg
I've yet to finish this third tank, but we were driving at about 70mph (right when the 4 extra valves kick in), so I'm thinking it should be over 40mpg.

Update on that aforementioned 3rd tank coming back from the Adirindacks: I drove at about 70mph (3.5k) on the highway and then about 55-60mph on a very hilly road that went up and down for a good 50 miles, after which I drove around town for a bit to finish the tank off. The result? 41mpg. I think I really need to keep a bit under 70 to stay out of the "VTEC" (ie the 4 extra valves kicking in) to get to my goal of 45mpg.
