!!!!!QUICK 1996-2000 CIVIC QUESTION!!!!!
Damnit! When will people learn how easy it is to work on their own car? Go to the auto parts store, by a $15 can of refrigerant that has the pressure gauge and fitting on it, then just follow the instructions on the back of the can. This process should take no longer than 10 minutes, and should cost no more than $20.

sometimes that piece of **** refrigerant in the can doesnt work. sometimes ppl think they ARE LOW on freon or just straight empty and use the **** from wal mart to fill it up and 1 of 2 things usually happens.....
The ac still doesnt work because that **** in a can didnt fill it up to the right amount.
or
the system becomes overcharged and now you have to put the system under a vacuum and refill it

to the original question to refill r134a over here in my area its roughly 80-100 bucks depending on who u take it too and granted all it needs is a recharge.....no other problems like condenser or evap or expansion valve needing replaced

How can you possibly ask this question 6 threads above this thread:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1665946
I love how everybody disses the "you can't just add refridgerant" crap - yeah you can - and as logn as you pull a vacuum on the system first (all you need is a pump) to like -30psi - you can fill it right up through there too
.
Don't waste your money at a shop.
As long as you pull a vacuum it's safe
.

you can add refrigerant, but i highly prefer you add it using some r134a or r12 gauges depending on which type of freon your ac uses. they make r134a and r12 gauges
using manifold gauges is the only real accurate way to tell how your ac system is functioning, or if your freon is low, overfilled or empty.
JUST MY OPINION

I'm pretty sure '96+ civics all use 134a

Every single car made after 1995 uses 134a. They did away with r12 mid year 1994. (government mandated for manufacturers, although you can still buy it with a special license)
And if you try to fill the ac without manifold gauges, then you deserve the results you will get.
Filling it is easy. Changing your oil is more involved. If you cant do it yourself then you should probably get a new hobby.

As the answers have shown you, you really should price check locally. The prices just vary too much, at least state to state / region to region.
