Strange Motor/Clutch Sound
My '97 Civic LX has started making a strange noise. I notice when the car is in neutral without the clutch depressed, there is some extra noise coming from the engine, it sounds almost like a wheel spinning free. When the clutch is depressed, it goes away. I notice a sound when driving as well. Anyone know what this could relate to? Hoping it's not the clutch going..

Not a grinding noise.. just sounds like the engine/transmission is louder. This is a 5-speed by the way.

You generally don't replace JUST the throwout bearing, it's usually the "clutch kit" which is clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing.
Sounds to me like a possible input shaft bearing - but I could be wrong. How many miles are on the clutch?

i didnt know it came with the bearing as well, would it be a good thing to upgrade the flywheel as well?

MOST (not all) clutch kits come with the pressure plate, clutch, and throwout bearing, I've seen some with and with just the clutch and pressure plate though.
If you wanna upgrade to a lighter flywheel that's your call. It WON'T increase HP (though it is possible to make it accelerate faster due to the faster tansfer of energy), but the car should feel a bit more responsive.
I'm pretty sure if you lighten a flywheel too much something bad happens
.
I forgot what, but too light of a flywheel is bad if I remember correctly. I think the stock's like a 13lbs flywheel in there or something to that effect. An 11lb or 10 lbs would make it feel nice and that's not lightening it too much.
Though I'm not sure if the money is worth it if everything else is stock.

I was thinking it could be the ISB also. That was my problem on my old tranny.

i also had isb probs, and when i ripped apart the trans, the throwout bearing was bad too, as well as the third gear synchro, so i got a new 3rd/4th gearset.
but generally, if you have the trans and clutch separated, why go through all the drama again? just replace everything and keep the old ones or sell them.

well, you should only get a lightened flywheel according to your clutch. for example, you would be stupid to get an 8lb flywheel with a stock clutch. 8lb flywheel would be good with a 6puck / sprung.

<FONT SIZE="6">IT IS <FONT COLOR="red">NOT</FONT> THE RELEASE BEARING.</FONT>
The release bearing won't make any noise when the clutch is fully engaged (pedal out), therefore it is not the release bearing.
If you take the advice of anyone here (except myself, Syndacate, and CapnKrunch) and drop the transmission to replace only the release bearing, you're going to get it all back together and realize the noise is still there.
You're going to have to drop the transmission, split the cases, and replace the input shaft bearing(s). See this guide for help: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=596873
Now while you're in there, it's certainly not a bad idea to also replace the release bearing, pilot bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and to have the flywheel resurfaced.

listen to this guy!
I had the same problem last year. I took my car to 3 different mechanics they all told me it was the input shaft bearing(s).
