Why? Because you can't hear your motor or the wind noise?
Seriously, I've never had a single safety issue in 4 years of riding with an iPod.

+1. As long as you can still hear whats going on around you, I think its fine.

Wearing headphones while operating a motor vehicle is illegal for a reason... and don't say "people turn their radios really loud so how's that different?" cause you know it is.

Not being able to hear emergency vehicles or alarm indicators like horns is the same whether or not you're listening to a loud radio or headphones. Citing a law as a justifcation-ends isn't going to convince me that something is dangerous.

That's why I don't listen to a loud radio on my bike.

Like I said, I wear 'em but I don't keep the volume super high either. I honestly don't see the difference between keeping the radio very loud in the car with the windows closed and wearing ear buds - either way you can't hear squat.
It shouldn't be a matter if it's legal or not...it should be about safety
If you feel safe wearing them then go ahead. If you think they'll render your hearing then keep them off.
The safest bet would be to not wear them obviously.

I've had 2 occasions when I didn't notice emergency vehicles because I had my headphones on. Once I was at the front at a light and just happened to look right to see an ambulance approaching. Another time, I saw two cars pulling over in front of me so it clicked and I did as well.
I don't ride with headphones on when I ride in groups because I like to hear when someone pulls up besides me.

excellent point. riding without gear isnt illegal.
i wear them when im going on extended highway runs and whenever else i feel like jammin. it keeps me from spacing out which i think is MUCH more dangerous. and never with groups. there is too much communication needed to be had.

If you can't hear emergency vehicles, your ear buds are probably too loud.

Difference is we stopped doing that in HS 'cause we realized it didn't get us as many chicks as we thought.

Well. Semantics be damned. If you keep your headphones at a reasonable volume they can ward off wind and motor noise induced tinnitus (unless you're Herb... then it just sucks for you) and still hear all emergency traffic signals just fine. If you keep your stereo or headphones too loud then you can't hear them... I don't see the difference. Either option requires that you select your volume reasonably.

Ops! I'd better start turning it down.

I was also thinking about using a ipod too on long highway ride. But I think when a good enough song came on I would be prone to do something dumb
. An since I know I dumb like that I choose not to use one. From a safety point of view I think as long as you can still hear a little bit of whats going around you an your comfortable with that you should be fine
