Hello all. I'm brand new to this board and need some good advice from someone.
I have a '87 Accord that I spent the last few weeks getting ready for a Demo Derby...trust me the car is pretty much toast. Rusty,faded and in need of more TLC than it's worth.
But here is the problem. Just as the green flag dropped at the track the car stalled [might have been scared] and would not restart. After much swearing and self abuse we diaganosed the problem as a broken timing belt. After of course checking everything else first!
Since I don't want to keep a rusty red white and blue camo'd demo car around and I put a lot of workinto it can I just change the belt and not have too many problems? So I can give the car a good Viking funeral at a demo next week!
Or is the head trashed?
Situation: car was at little more than an idle when the engine/battery light came on. I tryed to re-fire a few times and nothing. Tried to re-start again in the pits and nothing, the starter was turning at about 1/2 speed and we assumed poor wiring or a short. After turning it over a few times we gave up and drank a beer to drown our sorrows! Found out the next morning that along with no spark the distributer was not turning leading us to the timing belt.
Should I chance the $35 belt and change it out or tow the wreck to a salvage yard?

if you weren't high in the rpm range you might have gotten lucky...it's probably worth the cost of the belt to find out, **** even if the valves are bent it still might run enough to crash it into something.

This is kinda what I was hoping for. Maybe not too much damage to the head...well untill it overheats and dies anyways.

 

THE 86-89 HONDA ACCORD IS A NON INTERFERING MOTOR JUST INSTALL A NEW BELT AND DRIVE THE CRAP OUT OF IT.

 

Hello , is the non interference also relevent to a 87 accord lxi 2liter? The mechanic at the shop I bought the car from said it is and the valves are going to be Bent? Im really hoping not though. I was goin 70 slowed to 60 an all a sudden it died , I coasted off the hw. No start after that. Advice?
