stock rpm gauge efficientcy?
i have a gsr b18c in my crx and was wondering how accurate the stock rpm gauge was when reading the motors rpm's? can i rely on it and just shift before it bottoms out to 8000?
I had a stock Si cluster do the majority of my rpm estimates. key word being estimates.
They are fairly innacurate, especially in the higher rpms. I had a rev limiter of 8,500 and i usually shifted just a little over 8 grand, so i would always be buried on the tach needle. The key is to know the engine, shift by the seat of yor pants. If you really get too rev happy you've got a rev limiter there for that reason.
Eventually you'll know the sounds and the feel of your engine so well that you'd hardly look at a tach even if it was accurate.

Depends on the tach. But honestly, if you're really that concerned then I would say that you should for sure get an aftermarket tach. Not a cheappy autozone one either, the stocker is likely better.
But like I said, a week of driving the car and you wouldn't be hitting that rev limiter anymore regardless.

rev limiter isnt really a bad thing. not that you should be revving off it all day..but if you tap it 1-2 times in first gear..its there for a reason. to stop you before you really hurt something
my stock tach is off by about 200-300 rpm. i bounce off the rev limiter occasionally when my tach says about 7200ish, when the rev limit is set to 7500.
an aftermarket tach is the way to go. i'm looking forward to buying one that goes to 11..

the smaller the range the more accurate the tach will be. if your redline is 7,500 id get one thats 9 MAX. that way even if you modify the engine it still has room left on the tach.
think about it.
